The photos are not great (taken in strong sunlight at distance) but I would be interested in comments on this 2nd winter bird that I saw in Dublin last week.
It is likely one of those darker birds that seem to be in Ireland at this time of year (maybe from Iceland? I saw a few more but they tended to look greyer than this bird) but this one certainly stood out in flight and on the water. Unfortunately I did not get a clear shot of the tail but through my scope it appeared uniformly dark apart from the outer web of the outer tail feather.
Can anyone say for certain whether this bird could or could not be a smiths? I am on the side of Icelandic(?) HEGU myself, but am interested in the opinions of those with more experience.
