We're less than 8 weeks away from the main spring arrival of birders on Lesvos. With this in mind I'll keep all things relating to the 2011 season here on one thread. To kick things off a few bits of news from the island and other info.
Spring migrants - the first spring migrant has already been seen with a Northern Wheatear on 19 Feb - nearly three weeks earlier than the previous earliest record. February sightings are available here.
Sightings updates - I've already started a monthly sightings section on the Lesvos Birding website which I will update weekly running up to the main spring season when I'll switch to daily updates once I'm on the island (or earlier if others are on the island and emailing me news as last year).
Kalloni Environmental Centre - this new facility has been opened on the outskirts of Skala Kallonis and will be full open for the forthcoming season. I hope to have a bird log in there and I'm hoping the centre staff will allow birders internet access to the Lesvos Birding website to keep up with whats being seen each day (only the Pasiphae Hotel log gets pretty much everything I know about entered in to it). More details about the new centre here.
Flights - I've been trying to keep news on flights up to date on the Lesvos Birding website. Recently Thompson have brought their flight only deals down to a decent level at last, but both Aeagean and Olympic have cuased major stress with schedule changes to their flights via Athens. See the flights info page here.
Excursions - for the first time ever there will be part-day and full-day excursions run from Skala Kallonis for the week 29 Apr - 4 May. For a full itinerary of trips and availability please see here.
You may have heard I was planning to run some shearwater boat trips from Molivos. Unfortunately plans were scuppered by Easter weekend and May weekend falling on consecutive weekends and I couldn't get the boat I wanted. I'm still trying for next year though!
