I'd be interested in people's opinions on this gull that I photographed yesterday near Colwyn Bay, North Wales. Structure looked good for Caspian, so does the small beady eye, long thin tibia, mantle colour etc, but the bird seems too slight and rather on the small side. I'm not experienced enough with the species to comment about the covert/ tertial / primary patterning either.
Caspian is a potential National first so we are all very wary about claiming individuals here in wales and I think everyone's waiting for a classic 1st winter or adult before we get excited.
If this is just a strange looking 3CY 'argenteus' Herring Gull, what would I need on a bird of this age to hopefully turn one into a 'cachinnans'?
Thanks for any opninions in advance.
