what is this please
we saw this yesterday in a farmers field. it was about the size of a song thrush and bobbed its tail. it was very quick when it was darting about. can anyone help? Been bird watching for over twenty years and have never seen this bird before.

This is a female Northern Wheatear. In spring and autumn, they can be found in inland fields as they migrate north or south.

I wouldn't call them rare, but it is obviously unusual enough on inland fields for you to be surprised by its appearance. I used to to live in the 'prairies' of Suffolk and would occasionally see them.
