on saturday about at noon I was talking a walk up in the mountain I noticed this bird flying in the valley down below (Italian Alps). The valley bottom was about 2000 mt in altitude, and previous week I noticed a number of young marmots (marmota marmota) in exactly the same meadow where now this raptor was cruising. The top to bottom point of view was uncommon, and the bird was far away, something like 300 mt down and 500 away. Almost impossible for me to judge the size.
The bird repeatedly stood 'standing' in the air as in third image (D3029598.jpg). (btw, how is this behaviour called in english?)
First image (D3029582.jpg) is definitely bad, but is the only one in which the head can be seen.
Sorry for the bad quality of images.
I've some ideas, but maybe I'm completely wrong:
Falco tinnunculus: so high above the tree line?
Circaetus gallicus: quite rare but maybe possible?
Buteo buteo: again, so high?
thanks for your help
