Hi Martin, it's a Linnet.
Yep - a nice male Linnet. Look at the combination of greyish head, rich chestnut back, blackish primaries with white outer fringes and the deeply forked tail. No other British finch has this combination. If you saw it in flight you would have noticed a lot of white on the outer tail feathers too.
Actually there are two birds, the first being a female or perhaps a juvenile, with some streaking on the breast and back, and 2 and 3 is more like a male, but without red on the breast and forehead, so maybe a young male/adult female ?
