Martin Birch kindly sent me a link to photos of the Shore Lark at the QE2 reservoir in Surrey yesterday - http://www.surreybirdclub.org.uk/photographs.html
There are many elements of this bird that match the bird on Scilly in October 2001 - http://www.surfbirds.com/ID%20Articl...hlark0504.html
To me the bill looks relatively pointed and quite long; the overall contrast in plumage and the rufous and pinkish hues; the narrow yellow 'shadow' behind the mask. Also of interest is the presence of horns in October.
Are there any more photos of the bird?
Edit: just thought I would add that there seems to have been only two records for the east coast in the past month: two at Spurn ; two in Kent. In the westerlies we've had.....
