Reflection of same bird as below, but about 10 minutes earlier, before it headed westerly again. Both photos made with Nikon D70 and Sigma 400 macro, f6.3, 1/640 and below 1/500, ISO [I think] 400
Continuing bird, day 6. Photo made from east end of lake, looking to west. Bird nearly a mile from the dam depicted here.

Found by Jason Bidgood. Last seen in Colorado ~39 years ago!
3rd state record - 2nd day
Very distant photo, but that was as close as he came.
THIS IS A SCARCE WOODPECKER IN MICHIGAN’S UPPER PENINSULA, RATHER THAN A TRUE RARITY. AT TIMES IT HAS A TRUSTING NATURE TOWARD HUMANS THOUGH IT SEEMS TO BE QUITE ELUSIVE WHEN ONE IS LOOKING FOR THEM. IT WAS THEIR “HOMEBODY” BEHAVIOUR THAT ALERTED ME TO THE POSSIBILITY OF A NEARBY NEST. THE ENTRANCE WAS FACING EAST, 5 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND IN A WHITE SPRUCE, PICEA GLAUCA. AT A DISTANCE OF SEVERAL FEET THE YOUNG COULD BE HEARD CALLING FROM WITHIN THE CAVITY. BOTH SEXES CAME EVERY FEW MINUTES TO FEED THEM. THIS IS THE THIRD NEST I HAVE FOUND IN MICHIGAN.
