A rare bird in Michigan with irregular sightings often in unexpected places such as backyards, urban gardens and zoo grounds. On 26 September 2019: “Efforts to rescue the heron for the Howell Nature Center were thwarted although Alan bushwhacked through mud, phragmites, cattails and deepening water to drive the bird towards Sherri Smith’s nets as well as block its retreat; the bird did not go in the anticipated direction; it circumscribed Alan’s location and followed the channel westward until it was no longer visible in the vegetation.”
