Annotated Bird Species List

28. Oriental Darter (Anhinga melanogaster)
Several singles recorded on the R.Kinabatangan and on the road to Sukau from the Gomantong Caves.
29. Christmas Frigatebird (Fregata andrewsi)
1 female drifted over Sipadan.
32. Great-billed Heron (Ardea sumatrana)
Single bird recorded on successive days on the R.Segama at DVFC.
33. Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea)
Several seen at KS.
34. Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea)
Several at LB and the R.Kinabatangan
36. Striated Heron (Butorides striatus)
A few single birds on the R.Kinabatangan and in the broader channels of the mangroves at KNC.
37. Chinese Pond Heron (Ardeola bacchus)
Seen only once in marshy scrub area just beyond the airport at Phuket.
39. Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis)
Recorded only at LB.
40. Pacific Reef Egret (Egretta sacra)
Only grey phase birds identified where several at LB and Sipadan.
41. Chinese Egret (Egretta eulophotes)
2 birds in breeding plumage at high tide on the sandbars at the river mouth at Krabi.
42. Great Egret (Egretta alba)
Only recorded once in a swampy pool on the road from Gomantong to Sukau.
43. Intermediate Egret (Egretta intermedia)
A few recorded at LB and on the road from Gomantong to Sukau.
44. Little Egret (Egretta garzetta)
A couple at LB.
50. Yellow Bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis)
2 or 3 birds recorded on successive days at LB.
51. Cinnamon Bittern (Ixobrychus cinnamomeus)
2 birds recorded on successive days at LB.
57. Storm's Stork [NE] (Ciconia stormi)
Scope views of five birds followed by another 2 pairs and a single seen at the 11th hour on our last day on the R. Kinabatangan. One of the trip highlights.
60. Lesser Adjutant (Leptoptilos javanicus)
1 bird circling low over fields at SEP was a surprise.
66. Lesser Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna javanica)
A pair seen briefly on the pond just over the road from the Morakot at KNC.
84. Bat Hawk (Machaeramphus alcinus)
Recorded nightly flying over, and occasionally circling, the R. Segama at DVFC.
87. Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus)
Recorded regularly at SEP, R.Kinabatangan, KNC and KS.
88. White-bellied Fish-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster)
3 birds over the sea at KK. Also at SEP and Krabi.

Recorded daily on the R.Kinbatangan
90. Grey-headed Fish-Eagle (Ichthyophaga ichthyaetus)
Single birds recorded on 2 out of 3 days on R Kinabatangan.

Recorded at SEP, R.Kinabatangan, DVFC, FH. and TG.

Scope views of a bird presumed to be this species on our first day at MKNP.
102. Crested Goshawk (Accipiter trivirgatus)
Only recorded once perched close by our lodge at the R. Kinabatangan.
106. Grey-faced Buzzard (Butastur indicus)
One bird circled low over Sepilok allowing for excellent views - its prominent white chin and black mesial stripe clearly visible.
108. Black Eagle (Ictinaetus malayensis)
Recorded on two dates at MKNP.
109. Rufous-bellied Eagle (Hieraaetus kienerii)
1 adult at SEP.
113. Blyth's Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus alboniger)
1 adult seen circling low over KNC.

2 adults recorded, both on the road from Gomantong to Sukau.

1 recorded on a dead tree 1km along the road from TG to Ranau.

Recorded daily on the R.Kinabatangan and once from the canopy walkway at BRL.
124. Tabon Scrubfowl [NE] (Megapodius cumingii)
Recorded on successive days on Sipadan where it was relatively easy to find at the abandoned dive centre accomodation.
131. Red-breasted Partridge [E] (Arborophila hyperthyra)
Heard only at MKNP but always seemed distant.
132. Chestnut-necklaced Partridge [NE] (Arborophila charltonii)
Heard only at DVFC and BRL.
134. Crimson-headed Partridge [E] (Arborophila sanguiniceps)
Heard daily at MKNP on Silau Silau and KiauView trails; glimpsed on the day we walked up the Summit Trail. We did not find it particularly tape responsive.
137. Crested Fireback (Lophura ignita)
Surprisingly only 1female seen at W6 at DVFC. Supposedly common on the Nature Trail at DVFC.

Heard only on our last day at KS.

1 female recorded on the Hornbill trail at BRL.

2 or 3 birds on the grassy picnic area on the seaward side of the road at LB.

This was one of the very few waders at LB.

Good numbers seen from the harbour at KK.

2 seen on sandbars at Krabi rivermouth.

253. Thick-billed Pigeon (Treron curvirostra)
2 seen in trees by the road from TG to Raub.
256. Little Green-Pigeon (Treron olax)
Seen on 2 occasions from the road from SEP to the Forestry Research Station.
257. Pink-necked Green-Pigeon (Treron vernans)
Seen just once from the road from SEP to the Forestry Research Station.

8 to 10 of these beautifully plumaged birds seen on Sipadan.

Seen on 2 successive dates on R. Kinabatangan and also once at BRL.

Heard constantly at MKNP but we only managed to glimpse one bird.

Well and easily seen on Sipadan but others who visited 10 days later saw none. Probably very mobile between islands.

Several seen around TG.

Seen on all 3 days at PHS.

One seen in the park at Tanjung Aru just outside KK.
288. Blue-crowned Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus galgulus)
A pair seen perched briefly from the R.Kinabatangan and 15-20 flying to roost at TG.
294. Indian Cuckoo (Cuculus micropterus)
Heard daily at PHS, R.Kinabatangan and DVFC but not seen.
295. Oriental Cuckoo (Cuculus saturatus)
Excellent views of two males; one at PHS and one from the canopy walkway at BRL.

Heard only on one date at KNC.

Heard at most locations throughout the trip and finally seen at KS.

Well seen at FH, TG and KNC.
309. Green-billed Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus tristis)
Well seen on both trips to the mangroves at Krabi.

Seen at PHS and SEP.
311. Red-billed Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus javanicus)
Seen once along the road at DVFC.
312. Chestnut-breasted Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus curvirostris)
Seen regularly at PHS, R.Kinabatangan and DVFC.

Seen once in the scrubby area and secondary growth leading to SEP.

Seen in the scrubby area and secondary growth leading to SEP.

Seen in the marshy area at LB.
322. Mountain Scops Owl (Otus spilocephalus)
Heard nightly around the cabins at MKNP.
333. Buffy Fish Owl (Ketupa ketupu)
4 seen on night canoe trip on the R.Kinabatangan and once at DVFC.
334. Collared Owlet (Glaucidium brodiei)
Heard daily at FH and TG.
338. Brown Wood Owl (Strix leptogrammica)
Seen once at DVFC around the centre.
354. Edible-nest Swiflet (Collacalia fuciphaga)
Seen on the nest at Gomantong Caves. An echolocating Swiftlet it nests deep inside the cave. Nests are made entirely of hardened saliva and are pure white.
355. Black-nest Swiflet (Collacalia maxima)
Seen at the nest at Gomantong Caves. Also an echolocating Swiftlet which nests deep inside the cave. Nests are made from saliva mixed with feathers and are 'greyer' than those of the preceeding species.
356. Mossy-nest Swiflet (Collacalia salangana)
Seen at the nest at Gomantong Caves.Also an echolocating Swiftlet it may nest deep within the cave but the ones we saw were nearer the entrance than either of the preceeding species.
358. Glossy (White-bellied) Swiftlet (Collacalia esculenta)
Seen daily almost everywhere. Also seen at the nest at Gomantong Caves where, not being an echolocating swift, it nests at the cave mouth.
359. Cave Swiflet (Collocalia linchi)
Some swiftlets at MKNP nesting in the administration buildings at the park entrance were probably this species.
363. Silver-rumped Swift (Raphidura leucopygialis)
Regular at PHS, SEP, DVFC and FH.
365. Little Swift (Apus affinis)
A few seen in KK.
366. Asian Palm-Swift (Cypsiurus balasiensis)
Only seen at KNC.
367. Grey-rumped Treeswift (Hemiprocne longipennis)
Fairly common at PHS and SEP.
370. Red-naped Trogon (Harpactes kasumba)
1 female seen at DVFC at W10.
371. Diard's Trogon (Harpactes diardii)
2 separate males seen on the early morning walks back along the entrance road from BRL.
371. Whitehead's Trogon [E] (Harpactes whiteheadii)
A large trogon; we eventually saw both female and male very well at the upper end of the Silau Silau Trail. (This area seems to be amongst the most reliable for this species).A spectacular bird and probably the best of the Bornean trogons.
373. Cinnamon-rumped Trogon (Harpactes orrhophaeus)
1 male seen from a tributary of the R.Kinabatangan.
374. Scarlet-rumped Trogon (Harpactes duvaucelii)
1 male seen on the lower end of the Hornbill Trail at BRL.
375. Orange-breasted Trogon (Harpactes oreskios)
Male and female well seen from the road from TG to Raub close to the construction site at the start of the 'new road' to FH.
376. Red-headed Trogon (Harpactes erythrocephalus)
Male and female about 70 metres along the Bishop Trail from the Old Zoo entrance and a pair also on the Hemmant Trail.
377. Common Kingfisher (Alcedo athis)
A couple seen at LB.
378. Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting)
Seen on several occasions on the smaller tributaries of the R.Kinabatangan and at DVFC.
379. Blue-banded Kingfisher (Alcedo coerulescens)
Seen only once at PHS along one of the streams that cross the trail up to the Langanan Waterfall.
381. Black-backed Kingfisher (Ceryx erithracus)
Seen on 2 occasions around the lodge at BRL.
382. Rufous-backed Kingfisher (Ceryx rufidorsa)
Scope views from the guesthouse at SEP.
383. Stork-billed Kingfisher (Pelargopsis capensis)
Common and obvious at most locations: LB, R. Kinabatangan, DVFC and BRL.
385. Ruddy Kingfisher (Halcyon coromanda)
A couple of flight views and one bird briefly perched in the mangroves at Krabi. We only saw this bird on our second trip with Mr.Dai. He called the bird in from some way off and the chances of seeing it well without him are slim.
386. White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis)
Seen at LB on successive days and at KS.
389. Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris)
Common in the appropriate habitat - seen at LB, PHS, R.Kinabatangan PS and Krabi.
M304.Brown-winged Kingfisher (Halcyon amauroptera)
Not uncommon in the mangroves at Krabi.
392. Chestnut-headed Bee-Eater (Merops leschenaulti)
A small party seen in the pines fringing the beach at our hotel, the Crown NaiYang near Phuket airport.
394. Blue-throated Bee-Eater (Merops viridis)
Common: seen at LB, R.Kinabatangan, SEP and DVFC.
396. Red-beared Bee-Eater (Nyctyornis amictus)
Seen on 2 occasions, in 'the grid' at DVFC and at BRL.
397. Dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis)
Seen on its conspicuous perches at MKNP, SEP, R.Kinabatangan, DVFC and KNC
M315.Indian Roller (Coracias bengalensis)
Only seen once at Krabi airport.
399. Bushy-crested Hornbill (Anorrhinus galeritus)
This species moves around in noisy gangs of 8-10 birds. Seen twice, once flying over the R.Kinabatangan and then perched in a fruiting fig tree near the lodge at BRL.
401. Wrinkled Hornbill (Aceros comatus)
The Field Guide describes this species as shy and so it proved. Seen only once and then poorly - a pair flying over the R Kinabatangan to roost at dusk.
402. Wreathed Hornbill (Aceros undulatus)
A pair seen flying low over the forest at DVFC.
404. Asian Black Hornbill (Anthracoceros malayanus)
Scope views of a pair at SEP, seen daily on the R.Kinabatangan and scope views again in the fruiting fig at BRL.
405. Oriental Pied Hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris)
Seen daily along the R.Kinabatangan.
406. Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros)
Having missed this bird last year in Peninsular Malaysia we were very eager to find it. As it turned out we need not have worried as we saw it daily at close quarters on the R. Kinabatangan and in the fruiting fig at BRL. A wonderful bird.
408. Helmeted Hornbill (Buceros vigil)
Fantastic bird whose appearance is only outdone by its manic call. Not at all common on our trip and only one bird seen, but on successive days, in the fruiting fig tree at BRL where we enjoyed great scope views.
409. Fire-tufted Barbet (Psilopogon pyrolophus)
Not found in Sabah but common at FH along Bishop and Hemmant Trails.
412. Gold-whiskered Barbet (Megalaima chrysopogon)
Heard regularly at PHS but proved difficult and only seen once in a tree around the hot springs. Fortunately birds at BRL and FH proved more co-operative.
413. Red-crowned Barbet (Megalaima rafflesii)
Only seen in one location, at KNC, where it was seen on successive days in a fruiting tree along the B trail.
414. Red-throated Barbet (Megalaima mystacophanus)
Heard regularly at PHS but only seen once at the top of the trail to the Langanaan Waterfall where it sat for ages in plain view.
416. Black-browed Barbet (Megalaima oorti)
Not found in Sabah but common at FH where it can be seen anywhere.
417. Mountain Barbet [E] (Megalaima monticola)
Call, a fast took-took-took-took-hiccup,is repeated constantly but the bird is much more difficult to see. Only seen once on the Bukit Tupai Trail at MKNP.
418. Yellow-crowned Barbet (Megalaima henricii)
Heard incessantly, a fast repeated trrt-tok-tok-tok-tok but never seen.
420. Golden-naped Barbet [E] (Megalaima pulcherrima)
Seen daily at MKNP.
421. Blue-eared Barbet (Megalaima australis)
Seen on a couple of occasions in trees lining smaller tributaries of the R.Kinabatangan.
424. Brown Barbet (Calorhamphus fulginosus)
This most unbarbetlike barbet was only seen once - a group in the early morning at the ox-bow lake up the R.Kinabatangan.
427. Rufous Piculet (Sasia abnormis)
Seen on three occasions; from the boardwalk into Gomantong Caves, on W5 in 'the grid' at DVFC and along the road at BRL. Generally lower storey of the forest where they can be quite noisy for such tiny birds. Also make a gentle tapping when feeding
428. Rufous Woodpecker (Celeus brachyurus)
Heard daily at PHS but only seen once from the clearing beyond the hot springs on the way to the Kipungit Waterfall.
T403.Streak-breasted Woodpecker (Picus viridanus)
Seen firstly on the B Trail at KNC and then in the mangroves at Krabi.
431. Greater Yellownape (Picus flavinucha)
Only seen once on the Hemmant Trail at FH
432. Crimson-winged Woodpecker (Picus puniceus)
Only seen once at W9 in 'the grid' at DVFC.
435. Banded Woodpecker (Picus miniaceus)
Seen on 2 out of 3 days at PHS.
438. Buff-rumped Woodpecker (Meiglyptes tristis)
Seen just once at PHS.
439. Buff-necked Woodpecker (Meiglyptes tukki)
Seen at W9 in the grid at DVFC and on the Hornbill Trail at BRL.
440. Great Slaty Woodpecker (Mulleripicus pulverulentus)
A pair seen very well from the boat on the R. Manango, a small tributary of the R Kinabatangan.
441. White-bellied Woodpecker (Dryocopus javanensis)
It sounds like someone gave this bird a power hammer. Very loud hammering led to scope views of this great woodpecker at SEP. Also well seen on the ox-bow lake at the R.Kinabatangan.
444. Sunda (Brown-capped Pygmy) Woodpecker (Picoides moluccensis)
Only seen once in the mangroves at KS.
445. Grey-and-buff Woodpecker (Hemicircus concretus)
Seen once at SEP in the secondary growth along the road behind the Forest Research Centre.
446. Maroon Woodpecker (Blythipicus rubiginosus)
Seen once between W6 - W7 in the grid at DVFC.
447. Orange-backed Woodpecker (Reinwardtipicus validus)
A small party seen at SEP and a pair at DVFC.
448. Greater Goldenback (Chrysocolaptes lucidus)
Seen on a couple of occasions at DVFC.
450. Black-and-red Broadbill (Cymbirhynchus macrorhynchos)
Seen daily on the R.Kinabatangan including 3 roosting birds huddled together on our night cruise. Also seen at BRL and Krabi.
451. Banded Broadbill (Eurylaimus javanicus)
Heard daily at DVFC and BRL and eventually well seen from the canopy walkway at BRL.
452. Black-and-yellow Broadbill (Eurylaimus ochromalus)
This exquisite broadbill seen regularly at PHS, DVFC and KNC.
453. Silver-breasted Broadbill (Serilophus lunatus)
Seen on successive days at TG from the road up to FH and the road to Raub.
454. Long-tailed Broadbill (Psarisomus dalhousie)
Another stunning broadbill seen regularly in mixed flocks from both the roads ( Lady Jalan Maxwell) and trails at FH.
455. Green Broadbill (Calyptomena viridis)
This gave us considerable trouble before we eventually saw a female from the canopy walkway at BRL and the B trail at KNC. It is easily overlooked.
457. Whitehead's Broadbill [E] (Calyptomena whiteheadi)
Having seen one briefly in flight at the 1km marker on the Power Station Rd. at MKNP, we eventually saw a perched bird in the lower canopy on our sixth walk on the upper end of the Silau Silau trail. This seemed to be the most regular spot to find Whiteheads but still tricky as it is generally silent - we only heard its odd snoring/wheezing call on 2 occasions. One of the birds of the trip.
M371Rusty-naped Pitta (Pitta oatesi)
As in our trip last year birds were calling along the Bishop Trail particularly the first 100metres from the old Mini Zoo but they remained extremely hard to see. On the third morning one bird was briefly seen in the gully below the trail.
461. Blue-headed Pitta [E] (Pitta baudii)
Certainly heard once at BRL and possibly on another occasion at DVFC. By the time we were arrived at DVFC there was little vocalisation from this species and they proved impossible for us to find. Others did see then but with much more difficulty than expected. This was the "dip of the trip"
462. Blue-winged Pitta (Pitta moluccensis)
One migrating bird found on the Hemmant Trail at FH was a surprise. Several more heard and 4-5 seen at KNC where they seemed to favour the forest/plantation edges on the main road leading to the KNC plateau beyond the left hand turn off to the A Trail up to the Boundary and U trails.
464. Mangrove Pitta (Pitta megarhyncha)
Mangrove Pittas seem relatively confiding (for a pitta) and we had great views of 4 or 5 birds in the mangroves at Krabi.
467. Black-crowned (Black-headed / Black and Crimson) Pitta [E] (Pitta ussheri)
We were fortunate to have great views of a calling bird at SEP and heard others at DVFC. The monotone whistle is superficially similar to that of Garnet Pitta but goes on longer and has a slight upward inflection. This bird has been given species status by Lambert et al in their book Pittas, Broadbills and Asities. Other authorities have lumped it with both Garnet Pitta (P. granatina) or Graceful Pitta (P.venusta) of Summatra.
468. Hooded Pitta (Pitta sordida)
A few heard calling and one seen well along the U Trail at KNC.
T445.Gurney's Pitta [E] (Pitta gurneyi)
Gurney's is a wet season breeder which begins calling with the onset of the rainy season. Available literature suggested that historically the first week in May was the optimum time but this year the rains had come early and birds had been calling since March. Accordingly as we arrived calling had significantly diminished as breeding had begun and the pitta was becoming very difficult. After 2 days we resorted to the services of Yothin Meekao and were quickly rewarded by great views of a male Gurney's in the forest down by U0.50. Fabulous bird.
T465.Dusky Crag Martin (Hirundo concolor)
2 or 3 birds seen around the limestone outcrops on the main channel into the mangroves at Krabi.
473. Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica)
Regular throughout the trip.

First bird seen on the trip at KL airport as we waited for our flight to KK.

A male seen only once at the 1km marker on the Power Station Road at MKNP.
542. Asian Fairy Bluebird (Irena puella)
This stunning bird seen a number of times. Male and female together from the entrance road at BRL and single males at DVFC and TG.
543. Crested Jay (Platylophus galericulatus)
Recorded at PHS in the forest just beyond the hot baths on the trail to Kipungit Waterfall, DVFC and on the Hornbill Trail at BRL. Bornean form coronatus is dark brown not black as in Peninsular Malaysia.
544. Short-tailed Magpie (Cissa thalassina)
Recorded on 4 dates at MKNP usually in small noisy parties in the lower storey, although can still be tricky to see well.
545. Green Magpie (Cissa chinensis)
Recorded only once at MKNP where its longer tail with black and white edgings clearly differentiated it from the previous species.
547. Bornean Treepie [E] (Dendrocitta cinerascens)
Common and easily seen at MKNP and PHS although in smaller numbers at PHS.
549. Black Magpie (Platysmurus leucopterus)
Recorded on 2 dates, first at DVFC and then on the TekalaTrail at BRL. The Bornean form P.l. aterrimus is completely black whereas the Summatran form P.l leucopterus has a white wing patch.

Recorded regularly at DVFC and BRL.

Recorded on 2 dates at PHS.

Another "must see" endemic we were fortunate to obtain excellent scope views on 2 successive days at SEP, once from the boardwalk leading to the feeding platform and along the Waterfall Trail. Also seen well from the canopy walkway at BRL.

One seen in the mangrove at KS.
556. Sultan Tit (Melanochlora sultanea)
2 birds well seen in the upper storey of the forest from the road from TG to Raub close to the construction site at the start of the 'new road' to FH.
557. Velvet-fronted Nuthatch (Sitta frontalis)
Only recorded once when seen in the garden grounds of Proboscis Lodge on the R.Kinabatangan.
559 Black-capped Babbler (Pellorneum capistratum)
Recorded initially on 2 successive days at SEP where its high pitched weet call indicated its presence. Seen again at W5 at DVFC.

Seen only once and then poorly at FH on the Bishop Trail.
560. Temminck's Babbler (Pellorneum pyrrogenys)
Heard every morning at first light at the junction of the upper end of the Kiau View Trail and the Power Station Road. 2-3 birds would call for 10 -15 minutes before disappearing down the slope. Seen poorly on only one occasion.
