Marbled Wood-Quail, Odontophorus gujanensis detected on 10 days, mostly near area of end of Caja Extension

PHALACROCORACIDAE (CORMORANTS)
Neotropic Cormorant, Phalacrocorax brasilianus detected on all boat trips

ANHINGIDAE (ANHINGAS)
Anhinga, Anhinga anhinga detected on almost all boat trips, sometimes seen soaring from the tower

Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Tigrisoma lineatum detected on 20 days, mostly near floating deck, becoming vocal in predawn darkness near the end of my stay
Agami Heron, Agamia agami 1 ad. and 1 juv. seen on separate days, but both near the Amazona kawalli trail.
Boat-billed Heron, Cochlearius cochlearius detected on 2 days, on rocks at dusk close to the lodge
Zigzag Heron, Zebrilus undulatus detected on 15 days, vocal most every predawn after 15 Oct.

Wood Stork, Mycteria americana detected on 25 days; the rookery on the island contained nearly fully grown young by mid-Oct.

CATHARTIDAE (NEW WORLD VULTURES)
Turkey Vulture, Cathartes aura detected on one day on the way to AF.
Greater Yellow-headed Vulture, Cathartes melambrotus detected almost every day; max of 10
Black Vulture, Coragyps atratus seen on most days at lodge, but usually only 2-6.
King Vulture, Sarcoramphus papa detected on 23 days

PANDIONIDAE (OSPREY)
Osprey, Pandion haliaetus detected twice, 7 Sep and 13 Oct.

ACCIPITRIDAE (HAWKS)
Gray-headed Kite, Leptodon cayanensis detected on 4 days
Hook-billed Kite, Chondrohierax uncinatus detected on 18 days, max of 10 at once from dry pond on Manakin trail on 11 Oct.
Swallow-tailed Kite, Elanoides forficatus detected on 29 days, max of 50 on 9 Oct.
Snail Kite, Rostrhamus sociabilis detected on 2 days, max of 9 at Limão on 17 Sep. Later in Oct. Karen and Mark saw a large group at the Ilha Ariosto.
Double-toothed Kite, Harpagus bidentatus detected on 10 days
Plumbeous Kite, Ictinia plumbea detected on 37 days, max of 40 on 30 Sep.
Gray-bellied Hawk, Accipiter poliogaster detected on two days, both flyovers; one on 26 Sep at Manakin trail pond and 1 on 26 Oct upriver from lodge.
Tiny Hawk, Accipiter superciliosus detected on one day; flyover on 26 Sep near Manakin trail pond.
Bicolored Hawk, Accipiter bicolor detected on day, flying and perched at big treefall on Taboca trail on 23 Sep.
White-browed Hawk, Leucopternis kuhli detected on 5 days, mostly of a pair at the tower (and seen on at least 3 additional days by others). Also one seen in forest on Castanheiras trail.
White Hawk, Leucopternis albicollis detected on two days, one from tower on 26 Oct. perched 450 meters distant to WNW; the other flying over the river downstream from Casthanherias trail on 29 Oct.
Great Black Hawk, Buteogallus urubitinga detected on 27 days, mostly pertaining to a juv. and adults near lodge.
Black-collared Hawk, Busarellus nigricollis detected on two days, both at Cigana Lagoons
Roadside Hawk, Buteo magnirostris detected on one day on trip to AF
Gray Hawk, Buteo nitidus detected once, on 10 Oct at Limão.
Broad-winged Hawk, Buteo platypterus detected only on one day: 3 together at tower, moving to ENE on the oddly early date of 11 Sep.
Crested Eagle, Morphnus guianensis seen by Mark and Karen (ph) perched near river downstream from Limão in late Oct.
Harpy Eagle, Harpia harpyja detected at nest at AF (I saw only the juv., but adults also seen on later dates by several clients); Karen also detected and ad. (ph) from the river upstream from Limão on 6 Oct.
Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle, Spizastur melanoleucus detected once, an adult soaring over from the floating deck on 28 Sep.
Black Hawk-Eagle, Spizaetus tyrannus Gilmar and departing clients saw one perched near mouth of Cristalino the day he picked me up on my arrival, 30 Aug.; one probably seen briefly downstream from Castanheiras on 13 Sep.

Sunbittern, Eurypyga helias detected on 16 days, more when the river was low. Max of 3.

Pied Lapwing, Vanellus cayanus detected on 9 days, all at the Ilha Ariosto
Southern Lapwing, Vanellus chilensis detected on 4 days, twice on trip to AF, once at Limão, and once flying over at the Serra

Solitary Sandpiper, Tringa solitaria detected on one day, 31 Aug at Ilha Ariosto

Mealy Parrot, Amazona farinosa not detected with certainty; birds heard and thought to be this species, but then later seen well, were determined to be A. kawalli

Hoatzin, Opisthocomus hoazin detected on 4 days, all trips to Cigana Lagoons

Dark-billed Cuckoo, Coccyzus melacoryphus detected on 4 days – once on the Serra and 3 times between 800-1500 m on Taboca
Squirrel Cuckoo, Piaya cayana detected on 28 days
Black-bellied Cuckoo, Piaya melanogaster detected on 11 days
Little Cuckoo, Piaya minuta detected on 2 days
Greater Ani, Crotophaga major detected on 34 days; max of 200 in one group on 24 Sep but disappearing abruptly after Oct 11, with only 3 individuals seen thereafter.
Smooth-billed Ani, Crotophaga ani detected on 24 days, usually just a pair around the lodge, at Limão, or on trips to AF
Guira Cuckoo, Guira guira detected once on trip to AF

TYTONIDAE (BARN OWLS)
Barn Owl, Tyto alba detected on one day at dusk flying by and calling at Tower on 19 Sep.

STRIGIDAE (OWLS)
Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl, Megascops watsonii detected on 28 days, including one bathing at the Saleiro after dark.
Crested Owl, Lophostrix cristata detected on 9 days, including a pair flushed off Haffer Trail during the day (ph).
Spectacled Owl, Pulsatrix perspicillata detected on 2 days – one being mobbed by passerines at day roost on Manakin Trail on 21 Sep. and 1 calling at lodge on 21 Oct.
Mottled Owl, Ciccaba virgata detected on one day – calling predawn upstream from the Teles Pires Trail crossing of the Saleiro Stream on 16 Oct.
Black-banded Owl, Ciccaba huhula not detected with certainty, but one possible heard at about 900 m on Taboca on 2 Sep.
Amazonian Pygmy-Owl, Glaucidium hardyi detected on 10 days, including 3 birds singing at once from the Tower on 28 Oct., each at a different pitch nearly forming a perfect minor triad chord.
Burrowing Owl, Athene cunicularia detected on the Carvalho Ranch

NYCTIBIIDAE (POTOOS)
Great Potoo, Nyctibius grandis detected on 10 days, most involving ad. on chick on the Serra up until 14 Sep. (fledged or disappeared shortly thereafter), but also seen/heard from river at and at least once at lodge.
Long-tailed Potoo, Nyctibius aethereus detected on three days. First heard, but not recognized at first, about 1 km downstream from lodge on 9 Oct. Then heard, seen, and recorded about 100 m before the high point of Teles Pires Trail predawn on 14 and 16 Oct. Second and third record for Cristalino Region.
Common Potoo, Nyctibius griseus detected on 4 days, all downstream from lodge, including one on probable nest 1/2 km down from lodge starting 19 Oct.

CAPRIMULGIDAE (NIGHTJARS)
Short-tailed Nighthawk, Lurocalis semitorquatus detected on 22 days
Common Nighthawk, Chordeiles minor not detected with certainty; see next.
Lesser/Common Nighthawk, Chordeiles acutipennis/minor One Chordeiles sp. was likely C. minor, flying very high and towards the east over the lodge at dusk on 8 Oct.
Common Pauraque, Nyctidromus albicollis detected on at least 26 days, including one on egg starting 23 Sep.
Ocellated Poorwill, Nyctiphrynus ocellatus detected on 10 days, with bird on chick up to about 5 Sep at ~330 m. on Taboca.
Silky-tailed Nightjar, Caprimulgus sericocaudatus detected on 4 days up to 2 birds at a time, about 300 m downstream from the lower end of Manakin Trail, first on 6 Sep. from boat, and up until at least 16 Oct., when seen by Nick Athanas and group from the new trail to this area cut by me and Francisco. Second record for Cristalino Region.
Blackish Nightjar, Caprimulgus nigrescens detected on 33 days, but always present on the south-facing roof of staff dorm; female on egg starting 25 Sep., chick after 11 Oct.
Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Hydropsalis climacocerca detected regularly at rocky Ilha, including bird doing distraction display on 26 Sep.; detected as individuals four times on Cristalino only after 17 Oct.

APODIDAE (SWIFTS)
White-collared Swift, Streptoprocne zonaris detected on three days only after 26 Oct.
Gray-rumped Swift, Chaetura cinereiventris detected on 14 days, both from river and Tower
Pale-rumped Swift, Chaetura egregia detected on 14 days, both from river and Tower
Amazonian Swift, Chaetura viridipennis not detected with certainty, see below
Sick's Swift, Chaetura meridionalis not detected with certainty, see below
brown-rumped swift, Chaetura sp. detected daily. The only "brown-rumped" swift on the official list is Amazonian Swift, and that may be a relatively safe assumption, but the possibility of the presence of Chapman's Swift and Chimney Swift doesn't seem to have been thoroughly eliminated, and field ID is highly problematical.
spine-tailed swifts, Chaetura sp. many small swifts seen daily, but rump color and size not always apparent
Short-tailed Swift, Chaetura brachyura detected on 10 days, max of 10.
Fork-tailed Palm-Swift, Tachornis squamata detected on 6 days, every trip to Cigana Lagoons and at palm grove to/from AF.
Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift, Panyptila cayennensis detected twice: one flying over at Ilha Ariosto on 11 Oct and 2 close by the Tower on 26 Oct.

TROCHILIDAE (HUMMINGBIRDS)
Rufous-breasted Hermit, Glaucis hirsutus detected on 7 days, mostly around lodge, but certainly overlooked.
new hermit, Phaethornis sp. nov. detected on 22 days, incl. one found alive in Biblioteca which later died on 6 Sep.
Reddish Hermit, Phaethornis ruber detected on 6 days
White-bearded Hermit, Phaethornis hispidus detected on 14 days
Eastern Long-tailed Hermit, Phaethornis superciliosus detected on two days
large hermit, Phaethornis sp detected on 11 days
Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Campylopterus largipennis detected on 29 days
White-necked Jacobin, Florisuga mellivora detected on 6 days, mostly from river
Black-throated Mango, Anthracothorax nigricollis detected on 15 days
Crimson Topaz, Topaza pella not detected, but Francisco saw an ad. in mid-Oct in the forest understory just past the dry stream and before the steepest part of the climb up the Serra on the way to the Mirante.
Festive Coquette, Lophornis chalybeus detected on one day, a male perched and preening in the presence of a mixed flock by a tree fall on Cacao Trail on 29 Sep. (ph).
Black-bellied Thorntail, Discosura langsdorffi detected on 4 days, all but one on the Serra; additional brief sightings of females on the Serra and at Limão
Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Thalurania furcata detected on 47 days, very often at the Calliandra by the greeting shelter.
White-chinned Sapphire, Hylocharis cyanus detected on 14 days
Versicolored Emerald, Amazilia versicolor detected on 10 days
Glittering-throated Emerald, Amazilia fimbriata detected on one day, at the dry pond on the Manakin Trail on 26 Sep.
Gould's Jewelfront, Heliodoxa aurescens detected on one day, at the Parque Estadual road below the Cigana Lagoons on 5 Sep.
Black-eared Fairy, Heliothryx auritus detected on 18 days
Long-billed Starthroat, Heliomaster longirostris detected on 25 days
Amethyst Woodstar, Calliphlox amethystina detected on 6 days, all but one day during the week spanning 24-30 Sep., clearly a very short window of migration/dispersal.

TROGONIDAE (TROGONS)
White-tailed Trogon, Trogon viridis detected on 35 days
Blue-crowned Trogon, Trogon curucui detected on 11 days, almost always along the river.
Violaceous Trogon, Trogon violaceus detected on 4 days, usually near the Tower
Collared Trogon, Trogon collar detected on 15 days
Black-throated Trogon, Trogon rufus detected on 2 days, on Rochas trail near Torre
Black-tailed Trogon, Trogon melanurus detected on 38 days
Pavonine Quetzal, Pharomachrus pavoninus detected on 1 day, 6 Sep., a bird seen by many on the Castanheiras trail. Karen also heard twice in October on the distant end of Caja trail.

ALCEDINIDAE (KINGFISHERS)
Ringed Kingfisher, Megaceryle torquata detected on 33 days
Amazon Kingfisher, Chloroceryle amazona detected on 50 days
Green Kingfisher, Chloroceryle americana detected on 29 days
Green-and-rufous Kingfisher, Chloroceryle inda detected on 21 days
American Pygmy Kingfisher, Chloroceryle aenea detected on 3 days

MOMOTIDAE (MOTMOTS)
Broad-billed Motmot, Electron platyrhynchum detected on 3 days, all the same bird at the stream crossing of Teles Pires trail.
Blue-crowned Motmot, Momotus momota detected on 41 days, but mostly heard and possibly not differentiated with 100% certainty from Rufous Motmot. However, vocalizing birds seen at least 4 times to confirm ID as this one.

GALBULIDAE (JACAMARS)
Brown Jacamar, Brachygalba lugubris detected on 9 days, all from river between "middle rock" and Amazona kawalli trail, except for one pair at about 1300 m on Taboca trail on 20 Sep.
Blue-cheeked Jacamar, Galbula cyanicollis detected on 6 days
Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Galbula ruficauda detected on 31 days, with one feeding young in nest hole at Castanheiras trail landing on and after 6 Sep.
Bronzy Jacamar, Galbula leucogastra detected on 6 days, all referring to the same individuals/pair on the Amazona kawalli trail and at or near the Manakin Trail dry pond.
Paradise Jacamar, Galbula dea detected on 41 days, feeding young in nest in termite mound on 28 Sep. and later.
Great Jacamar, Jacamerops aureus detected on one day, at the Parque Estadual road below the Cigana Lagoons on 5 Sep. Mark heard also on Castanheiras and Saleiro a couple times after mid-Oct.

BUCCONIDAE (PUFFBIRDS)
White-necked Puffbird, Notharchus hyperrhynchus detected on 16 days
Brown-banded Puffbird, Notharchus ordii detected on 7 days, both at and near dry pond on Manakin Trail and at Tower; also seen by others from river below Serra trail landing.
Pied Puffbird, Notharchus tectus detected on 3 days, all from Serra Mirante do São Francisco, max of 5 on 9 Oct.
Spotted Puffbird, Bucco tamatia detected on 2 days, both near highest part of Serra.
Collared Puffbird, Bucco capensis detected on 8 days, mostly heard, even from within my room on 2 consecutive mornings 5-6 Sep., but also along Caja, 900 m on Taboca, near stream crossing of Teles Pires trail, and about 1.5 km downstream from lodge from boat.
Striolated Puffbird, Nystalus striolatus detected on 6 days, from Tower, Serra, and rocky outcropping of Cacao trail.
Rufous-necked Puffbird, Malacoptila rufa detected on 5 days on Rochas, Manakin and Caja; one nesting at about 1200 m on the Caja trail, found by Francisco around 15 Oct, seen bringing food to incubating/brooding partner on 29 Oct.
Rusty-breasted Nunlet, Nonnula rubecula detected on one day, watched in the scope about 100 m w of the dry pond on the Manakin Trail on 21 Sep. The all drab upperside (including forecrown) and complete white eyering were apparent.
Rufous-capped Nunlet, Nonnula ruficapilla detected on 12 days
Black-fronted Nunbird, Monasa nigrifrons detected nearly every day, one seen carrying food on 8 Oct.
White-fronted Nunbird, Monasa morphoeus detected on 32 days
Swallow-winged Puffbird, Chelidoptera tenebrosa detected nearly every day, with nest holes apparently active the entire two months.

CAPITONIDAE (NEW WORLD BARBETS)
Black-girdled Barbet, Capito dayi detected on 20 days, including nearly every visit to the Tower

RAMPHASTIDAE (TOUCANS)
White-throated Toucan, Ramphastos tucanus detected on 47 days; one using nest hole on Caja near Rochas crossing on 15 Oct. and thereafter.
Channel-billed Toucan, Ramphastos vitellinus detected on 27 days
Gould's Toucanet, Selenidera gouldii detected on 10 days
Lettered Aracari, Pteroglossus inscriptus detected on 13 days
Red-necked Aracari, Pteroglossus bitorquatus detected on 20 days

Song much more closely matches that of Cocoa Thrush from Manaus rather than Hauxwell's Thrush from Rancho Grande, Rondônia; I never saw one well enough to study, but differences mostly comparative anyway. One investigating nest low in palm at Saleiro on 21 Sep.

Giant Anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla One seen by me and Hemme Battjes walking parallel to the Teles Pires trail about 350 m from its beginning (near the Blue-backed Manakin lek) on 22 Sep.
sloth species, Bradypus/Choloepus sp. seen by others on one day near Caja-Rochas junction; I can't remember which species.
Nine-banded Armadillo, Dasypus novemcinctus seen at least once by Mark
Greater Fishing Bat, Nictilio leporinus I saw it only once, just below the lodge, but I didn't try very often.
