Introduction

Due to a career change I had the opportunity to take a birding trip at very short notice, which meant I was looking for a destination which would require little, or preferably no, preparation. Serra dos Tucanos Lodge seemed an ideal choice, as this offered full board accommodation, airport collection and a series of daily excursions, or if I wanted to “do my own thing” they would arrange transport to local sites.

Serra dos Tucanos Lodge

The lodge is situated within the 46,000ha Tres Picos State Park in the heart of the Atlantic rain forest of south-east Brazil. The lodge is surrounded by forest and has several trails within the grounds as well as a number of feeding stations and hummingbird feeders. These attract a large number of species, some of which I saw nowhere else, this also offers excellent photography opportunities.

The lodge is owned and managed by Andy and Cristina Foster. Andy is from the UK and in 2001 he decided to make the move from the UK permanently and set up Serra dos Tucanos lodge. Pete Forrest, also from the UK is the resident bird guide and has an excellent knowledge of the local birds and their calls.

The daily routine at the lodge is as follows:

6.30 Breakfast is served
7.00 The daily excursion leaves.
13.00 Lunch is served (unless of course everybody is out on a full day’s excursion)
18.45 Daily log for those on the excursions.
19.00 Dinner is served

Details of the lodge can be found at www.serradostucanos.com.br

Transport

All provided by the lodge, either in the form of taxis, for the collection from the airport & trips to the trails or in their own minibus, which was used for the excursions.

Climate

It rained on most days, but not usually until the late afternoon/evening or overnight, which meant there was not too much disruption to the birding. On our visit to the wetlands we had rain for a couple of hours in the morning, which did reduce our time in the field.

Books & CD’s

The only field guide available is “All the Birds of Brazil” by Deodato Souza, published by Subbuteo Natural History Books. The illustrations are very poor and the text limited, but it is better than nothing! There are apparently several new field guides in preparation, which should be available within the year. Fortunately the lodge has a small library which contains several useful reference books such as a number of volumes of the Handbook of Birds of the World, which proved very useful in helping sort out the identification of some of the more tricky species.

I loaded the Birds of Brazil MP3 collection by Peter Boeasman, on to my i-pod, which I found invaluable, especially when birding the trails on my own.

Both of the above were obtained from wildsounds.com

Sites Visited

Details of all the sites visited can be found on the Lodger web site.

Itinerary

15th April

Arrived in Rio at 5.30, where I was met by the taxi driver and was soon on my way to the lodge which took about 1 ½ hours. On arrival at the lodge I was shown to my room and helped myself to the buffer breakfast which had been left out awaiting my arrival.

I spent the remainder of the morning either sitting on the balcony watching the feeders or wandering around the grounds of the lodge until lunch was served at 13.00.

The afternoon was spent on the lodge trails

Highlights: Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Plain Parakeet, Saw-billed Hermit, Black Jacobin, Spot-billed Toucanet, Tawny-throated Leaftosser, Black-cheeked Gnateater, Brazilian Tanager, Golden-chevroned Tanager, Green-headed Tanager.

16th April

I opted to go on the high altitude (lower) excursion, which was a full day, so a packed lunch was provided. The journey time to the site was approximately 50 minutes from the lodge and the track ran through a mixture of farmland & forest edge at an altitude of approximately 1600 meters.

Highlights: Plovercrest, Yellow-browed Woodpecker, Red-eyed Thornbird, Dusky-tailed Antbird, Rufous-capped Antshrike, Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Velvety Black-tyrant, Cinnamon Tanager, Bay-chested Warbling-finch , Half-collared Sparrow.

17th April

The day was spent on the Jacamar excursion; this excursion covers about 200km and stops at a number of varied habitats, including wet pasture/marsh, open farmland and forest edge, before arriving at the Jacamar site in the early afternoon. The variety of habitats enabled us to recorded in excess of 90 species on this excursion

Highlights: White-necked Hawk, Three-toed Jacamar, Yellow-eared Woodpecker, Hangnest Tody-tyrant, Grey-hooded Attila.

18th April

I spent the whole day on the Bamboo trail which is situated about 15 minutes drive from the lodge. This trail climbs gradually to approximately 1,450 meters and, as the name suggests, runs through some quite extensive areas of bamboo.

Highlights: Black-billed Scythebill, White-collared Foliage-gleaner, Bertonis Antbird, Brazilian Antthrush, Rufous Gnateater, Slaty Bristlefront, Hooded Berryeater.

19th April

The day was spent in the Serra dos Orgaos National Park, which is about an hours drive from the lodge, we spent a couple of hours in the lower altitude section, before spending the rest of the day on a higher altitude trail.

Highlights: Rufous-backed Antvireo, Mouse-coloured Tapaculo, Scale-throated Hermit.

20th April

The morning was spent on the Theodoro Trail, which starts opposite the Bamboo Trail at a height of about 1,100meters and gradually descends. The trail was originally a railway line, which was later made into a road, which was then abandoned when the main road was upgraded. Although mostly overgrown, it provides easy walking on a pleasant gradient.

I returned to the lodge for lunch and spent the rest of the day on the lodge trails.

Highlights: AM: White-shouldered Fire-eye, Pin-tailed Manakin, PM: White-throated Woodcreeper, Scaled Antbird.

21st April

The day was spent on the high latitude (upper) trail, which reaches an altitude in excess of 2000 meters. The majority of the trail is along a good, though rather steep, paved road, with the last section being on steps which lead up to a number of communication masts. Fortunately the daily lodge excursion was due to visit the high altitude (lower) trail, so I managed to arrange for the minibus to drop me off. Unfortunately though this was a Saturday and there were a number of groups of noisy teenagers along the route.

Highlights: Itatiaia Spinetail, Rufous-tailed Antbird, Black and Gold Cotinga.

22nd April

I spent the morning on the half day excursion to the Reserva Ecologica de Guapi Acu, which is an area of regenerated lowland forest & wetlands situated about an hours drive from the lodge. Shortly after leaving the lodge we drove into a heavy rain storm, which continued until about an hour after reaching the reserve. After a delayed start, we enjoyed a very pleasant few hours birding before returning to the lodge for lunch.

The afternoon was spent on the Cedea Trail which is situated about a 5 minutes drive from the lodge.

Highlights: AM: Long-billed Wren, Long-billed Wren, Yellow-lored Tody-flycatcher , Eye-ringed Tody-tyrant, Sooretama Slaty-antshrike. PM: Ferruginous Antbird, Streak-capped Antwren.

23rd April

The whole day was again spent on the Bamboo trail.

Highlights: Surucua Trogon, Ochre-rumped Antbird, Variagated Antpitta

24th April

The morning was spent on the lodge trails, before departing for the airport and the journey back home.
