The following trip report outlines the itinerary followed by the Naturetrek Tour that stayed at Serra dos Tucanos Lodge from 20th – 27th September 2008. The complete species list for the tour is at the end of this report.

Saturday 20th September – Arrival and Serra dos Tucanos Lodge

The group arrived on time at Rio de Janeiro Interntaional Airport and transferred to Serra dos Tucanos Lodge. Species seen on the transfer included the following; Cocoi Heron, Kelp Gull, Brown Booby and Magnificent Frigatebird

On arrival at the lodge the group quickly settled into birding the gardens and watching many species of tanagers feeding at the bird tables and studying the several species of hummingbirds that regularly come to the sugar feeders on the verandas. After lunch the group took a guided walk along the lodge trails.

Species of note for the day included: Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Plain Parakeet, Blue-bellied Parrot, Saw-billed Hermit, Frilled Coquette, Sombre Hummingbird, Violet-capped Woodnymph, Crescent-chested Puffbird, Blond-crested Woodpecker, Spot-breasted Antvireo, Black-cheeked Gnateater, Thrush-like Woodcreeper, Pin-tailed Manakin, Chestnut-bellied Euphonia, Green-headed, Red-necked, Golden Chevroned, Brazilian and Ruby-crowned Tanagers.

Sunday 21st September – Theodora trail and free afternoon.

After an early breakfast we headed off for the 20 minute drive to the start of the Theodora trail. This was a morning excursion only. In the afternoon the group birded the lodge trails.

Species of note for the day included: Brown Tinamou, Black and white Hawk-Eagle, Black Jacobin, Rufous-capped Spinetail, Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper, Star-throated Antwren, Bertoni’s Antbird, Rufous Gnateater, Brassy-breasted Tanager and Uniform Finch.

Monday 22nd September – Wetland reserve and Cedae trail

The morning was spent at the Wetland reserve and then after lunch the Cedae trail was walked.

Species of note for the day included: Capped Heron, Masked Duck, Spot-winged Wood- Quail, Spot-billed Toucanet, Lesser Woodcreeper, Sooretama Slaty-Antshrike, Ferruginous Antbird, Streak-capped Antwren, Blue Manakin, Eye-ringed Tody Flycatcher, and Long-billed Wren.

Tuesday 23rd September – Portao Azul and free afternoon.

After an early breakfast we headed off for the hours drive to the start of the Portao Azul trail. This was a morning excursion only. In the afternoon the group birded the lodge trails.

Species of note for the day included: Surucua Trogon, Saffron Toucanet, Yellow-browed Woodpecker, Pallid Spinetail, Scaled Woodcreeper, Ochre-rumped and Dusky-tailed Antbirds, Drab-breasted Bamboo-Tyrant, Shear-tailed Grey-Tyrant, Gilt-edged Tanager and Half-collared Sparrow.

Wednesday 24th September – High Altitude trails

Clear skies meant an attempt at higher altitudes was warranted. The first couple of hours were spent on the upper section of the Pico de Caledonia access road. Most of the rest of the day was spent on the lower section. The final hour was spent on the Macae de cima road.

Species of note for the day included: Dusky-legged Guan, Plovercrest, White-throated Hummingbird, White Woodpecker, Red-eyed Thornbird, Giant Antshrike, Rufous-tailed Antbird, Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Black and Gold Cotinga, Bare-throated Bellbird, Serra do Mar Tyrant Manakin, Serra do Mar Tyrannulett, Velvety Black-Tyrant, Blue-billed Black-Tyrant, Diademed Tanager, Rufous-crowned Greenlet, Bay-chested Warbling-Finch and Thick-billed Saltator.

Thursday 25th September – Serra dos Orgaos National Park

An early start for a full day in the National Park, 1 hours drive away from the lodge. We spent the first 2 hours in the lower part of the park before driving up to the highest car park in the upper part of the park.

Species of note for the day included: Grey-headed Kite, Rufous-capped Motmot, Yellow-eared Woodpecker, Pale-browed Treehunter, White-collared Foliage-Gleaner, Buff-throated Woodcreeper, White-bibbed Antbird, Mouse-coloured Tapaculo, Grey-hooded Flycatcher, Sharpbill, White-rimmed Warbler, Buffy-fronted Seedeater and Yellow-green Grosbeak.

Friday 26th September – Jacamar excursion.

Without doubt the Three-toed Jacamar is one of the target species of the whole week. We departed early for an hours drive to where we begun the days birding.

Species of note for the day included: Slaty-bellied Wood-Rail, Blackish Rail, Blue-winged Macaw, White-eyed Parakeet, Three-toed Jacamar, Tail-banded Hornero, Firewood Gatherer, Serra Antwren, Hangnest Tody-Tyrant, Crested-black Tyrant, Streamer-tailed Tyrant, Black-capped Donacobius, and Tawny-headed Swallow.

Saturday 27th September – Departure day

The group spent the early part of the morning around the lodge before departing back to Rio for their flight home at 11.30.

During the groups stay we had a combined total of 255 species with a further 15 heard. A total 85 Atlantic forest endemics were recorded.

BROWN TINAMOU (Crypturellus obsoletus)
Heard on several occasions from most forested areas. Also two were seen at the lodge and one on the Cedae trail.

TATAUPA TINAMOU (C. tataupa)
Heard only, at the wetland reserve on the 22nd.

LEAST GREBE (Tachybaptus dominicus)
Up to ten seen on the Wetland and Portao Azul excursions.

PIED-BILLED GREBE (Podilymbus podiceps)
One at the wetland reserve on the 22nd was the only record.

BROWN BOOBY (Sula leucogaster)
Several recorded on the journey up from the airport on the 20th.

NEOTROPIC CORMORANT (Phalacrocorax brasilianus)
Several recorded on the journey up from the airport on the 20th.

MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD (Fregata magnificens)
Several were recorded from the Rio- Niteroi bridge on the 20th.

WHISTLING HERON (Syrigma sibilatrix)
Two were seen on the Jacamar excursion.

CAPPED HERON (Pilherodius pileatus)
Three birds on the 22nd at the wetland reserve.

COCOI HERON (Ardea cocoi)
Two on the drive up from the airport and one on the drive to the national park were the only records.

GREAT EGRET (A. alba)
Seen in most wet areas along the roadside when on excursions.

SNOWY EGRET (Egretta thula)
Several recorded on the journey up from the airport on the 20th.

CATTLE EGRET (Bubulcus ibis)
Seen commonly in any suitable habitat.

STRIATED HERON (Butorides striatus)
One at the wetland reserve on the 22nd.

BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON (Nycticorax nycticorax)
A single recorded on the journey to the wetland reserve.

WHITE-FACED WHISTLING-DUCK (Dendrocygna viduata)
A flock of 14 birds at the wetland reserve.

BRAZILIAN TEAL (Amazonetta braziliensis)
Seen on the Wetland and Jacamar excursions.

MASKED DUCK (Nomonyx dominica)
Nine at the wetland reserve on the 22nd.

BLACK VULTURE (Coragyps atratus)
Seen daily, common.

TURKEY VULTURE (Cathartes aura)
Seen almost daily, common.

LESSER YELLOW-HEADED VULTURE (Cathartes burrovianus)
At least two were seen at the wetland reserve.

GREY-HEADED KITE (Leptodon cayanencis)
A single on the drive to the national park on the 25th.

SNAIL KITE (Rostrhamus sociabilis)
One at the wetland reserve on the 22nd was the only record.

PLUMBEOUS KITE (Ictinia plumbea)
Two on the Portao Azul excursion on the 23rd.

CRANE HAWK (Geranospiza caerulescens)
One at the wetland reserve on the 22nd was the only record.

WHITE-NECKED HAWK (Leucopternis lacemulata)
A single bird over the lodge on the last morning.

MANTLED HAWK (L. polionota)
A pair circling over the lodge on the last morning.

SAVANNA HAWK (Heterospizias meridionalis)
Recorded in small numbers on most excursions.

ROADSIDE HAWK (Buteo magnirostris)
Recorded almost daily in small numbers.

SHORT-TAILED HAWK (B. brachyurus)
A single on the drive back from the Portao Azul excursion.

WHITE TAILED HAWK (B. albicaudatus)
A single on the high altitude excursion and three on the Jacamar day were the only records.

BLACK AND WHITE HAWK EAGLE (Spizastur melanoleucus)
A single over the lodge on two dates.

BLACK HAWK EAGLE (S. tyrannus)
A single on the Portao Azul excursion on the 23rd.

SOUTHERN CARACARA (Caracara plancus)
Recorded almost daily from suitable habitats.

YELLOW HEADED CARACARA (Milvago chimachima)
Recorded almost daily from suitable habitats.

BARRED FOREST FALCON (Micrastur ruficolis)
Heard only, on the Theodora trail and at the national park.

AMERICAN KESTREL (Falco sparverius)
A single bird on the Jacamar excursion and one on the drive up from the airport.

APLOMADO FALCON (F. femoralis)
A pair on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th.

DUSKY-LEGGED GUAN (Penelope obscura)
A single on the 24th was the only record.

SPOT WINGED WOOD QUAIL (Odontophorus capueira)
A single at the lodge on the 22nd was the only record.

LIMPKIN (Aramus guarauna)
One bird on the drive back from the national park on the 25th.

SLATY-BREASTED WOOD-RAIL (Aramides saracura)
Singles on two dates at the lodge and three on the Jacamar excursion.

BLACKISH RAIL (Pardirallus nigricans)
Three were seen on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th.

PURPLE GALLINULE (Porphyrio martinica)
Four birds at the wetland on the 22nd.

COMMON MOORHEN (Gallinula chloropus)
Up to 40 birds at the wetland and a couple of other sightings during the week.

WATTLED JACANA (Jacana jacana)
Small numbers recorded on two dates.

SOUTHERN LAPWING (Vanellus chilensis)
Recorded almost daily in suitable habitats.

KELP GULL (Larus dominicanus)
Small numbers were recorded on the journey from the airport.

SOUTH AMERICAN TERN (Sterna hirundinacea)
Three were recorded on the journey from the airport.

PICAZURO PIGEON (Patagionas picazuro)
Small numbers recorded most days.

PLUMBEOUS PIGEON (P. plumbea)
One on the Macae de Cima road and two on the Jacamar excursion were the only records.

RUDDY GROUND DOVE (Columbina talpacoti)
Seen in small numbers almost daily.

WHITE TIPPED DOVE (Leptotila verreauxi)
A single at the wetland reserve on the 22nd was the only record.

BLUE-WINGED MACAW (Primolius maracana)
Ten were seen on the Jacamar excursion.

WHITE EYED PARAKEET (Aratinga leucophthalmus)
Several large flocks on the Jacamar excursion with at least seventy birds being seen.

MAROON- BELLIED PARAKEET (Pyrrhura frontalis)
Small numbers recorded in the lodge gardens daily. Also seen on several of the excursions.

PLAIN PARAKEET (Brotogeris tirica)
Small numbers recorded in the lodge gardens daily. Also seen on several of the excursions.

PILEATED PARROT (Pionositta pileata)
Heard only, at the national park on the 25th.

SCALY HEADED PARROT (Pionus maximiliani)
Recorded within the lodge grounds on several occasions, also on several of the excursions.

BLUE-BELLIED PARROT (Triclaria malachitacea)
Up to five seen on three dates.

SQUIRREL CUCKOO (Piaya cayana)
One or two birds were recorded almost daily.

SMOOTH BILLED ANI (Crotophaga ani)
Seen commonly in any suitable habitat.

GUIRA CUCKOO (Guira guira)
Seen commonly in any suitable habitat.

TROPICAL SCREECH OWL (Megascops choliba)
A pair were seen at a daytime roost at the wetland reserve on the 22nd.

FERRUGINOUS PYGMY-OWL (Glaucidium brasilianum)
Heard only, on the Theodora trail on the 22nd.

BURROWING OWL (Athene cunicularia)
A pair on the high altitude excursion on the 24th was the only record.

PARAQUE (Nyctidromus albicollis)
Three were seen at the wetland reserve on the 22nd.

SOOTY SWIFT (Cypseloides fumigatus)
A single over the lodge on the 21st.

WHITE COLLARED SWIFT (Stretoprocne zonaris)
Groups of up to one hundred birds recorded almost daily.

GREY-RUMPED SWIFT (Chaetura cinereiventris)
Three at the lodge on the 26th.

ASHY-TAILED SWIFT (C. andrei)
Four on the high altitude excursion on the 24th was the only record.

SAW BILLED HERMIT (Ramphodon naevius)
Recorded almost daily around the lodge.

SOMBRE HUMMINGBIRD (Campylopterus cirrhochloris)
Recorded almost daily at the lodge.

SWALLOW TAILED HUMMINGBIRD (Eupetomena macroura)
Seem almost daily in a variety of habitats.

BLACK JACOBIN (Melanotrochilus fuscus)
Seen almost daily around the lodge.

PLOVERCREST (Stephanoxis lalandi)
Only recorded on the 24th when two were seen.

FRILLED COQUETTE (Lophornis magnificus)
A female at the lodge on the 20th and a pair there on the last morning.

VIOLET CAPPED WOODNYMPH (Thalurania glaucopis)
Recorded almost daily.

WHITE THROATED HUMMINGBIRD (Leucochloris albicollis)
Singles on the Theodora trail and on the high altitude excursion were the only records.

VERSICOLOURED EMERALD (Agyrtria versicolor)
Up to five seen on three dates.

BRAZILIAN RUBY (Clytolaema rubricauda)
A single at the lodge on the last morning was the only record.

SURUCUA TROGON (Trogon surrucura)
Up to five birds recorded on three dates.

RINGED KINGFISHER (Ceryle torquata)
Three were seen during the week.

RUFOUS-CAPPED MOTMOT (Baryphthengus ruficapillus)
Singles at the national park and at the lodge.

THREE-TOED JACAMAR (Jacamaralcyon tridactyla)
As usual this bird performed very well with two being recorded on the 26th.

CRESCENT CHESTED PUFFBIRD (Malacoptila striata)
Singles at the lodge on three dates.

SAFFRON TOUCANET (Baillonius bailloni)
A single at the Portao azul on the 23rd was the only record

SPOT BILLED TOUCANET (Selenidera maculirostris)
Four on the Cedae trail on the 22nd.

CHANNEL BILLED TOUCAN (Rhamphastos vitellinus)
Up to four birds recorded on three dates.

TOCO TOUCAN (R. toco)
A single on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th.

WHITE BARRED PICULET (Picumnus cirratus)
A single at the national park on the 25th was the only record.

WHITE WOODPECKER (Melanerpes candidus)
A group of six were seen on the high altitude excursion.

YELLOW EARED WOODPECKER (Veniliornis maculifrons)
A single at the national park on the 25th was the only record.

YELLOW-THROATED WOODPECKER (Piculus flavigula)
A single at the national park on the 25th was the only record.

YELLOW BROWED WOODPECKER (Piculus aurulentus)
Two on the Portao Azul excursion and one at the national park were the only records.

GREEN-BARRED WOODPECKER (Colaptes melanochloros)
A single at the national park on the 25th was the only record.

CAMPO FLICKER (C. campestris)
Groups of up to four birds were seen on two dates.

BLOND CRESTED WOODPECKER (Celeus flavescens)
Recorded on several dates at the lodge.

Three on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th were the only records.

Seen commonly in any suitable habitat.

A single on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th was the only record.

A pair was seen on the high altitude excursion on the 24th.

A pair on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th was the only record.

STREAKED XENOPS (Xenops rutilans)
Ones or twos on three dates.

PALE-BROWED TREEHUNTER (Cichlocolaptes leucophrus)
A single bird at the national park on the 25th.

BUFF FRONTED FOLIAGE GLEANER (Philydor rufus)
A single on the Cedae trail and three on the Portao Azul excursion were the only records.

WHITE-COLLARED FOLIAGE GLEANER (Anabezenops leucophthalmus)
A single bird was seen at the national park on the 25th.

WHITE-EYED FOLIAGE GLEANER (Automolus leucophthalamus)
Heard only, at the lodge and the national park.

TAWNY THROATED LEAFTOSSER (Sclerurus mexicanus)
Heard only, on the Cedae trail.

SHARP TAILED STREAMCREEPER (Lochnias nematura)
The breeding pair were regularly seen at the lodge.

THRUSH-LIKE WOODCREEPER (Dendrocincla turdina)
A single showed well on the 20th on a lodge trail.

OLIVACEOUS WOODCREEPER (Sittasomus griseicapillus)
Recorded almost daily in suitable habitat.

WHITE THROATED WOODCREEPER (Xiphocolaptes albicollis)
One at the lodge on the 23rd and one at the national park on the 25th were the only records.

BUFF-THROATED WOODCREEPER (Xiphorhynchus guttatus)
A pair at the national park on the 25th was a new record for the lodge list.

LESSER WOODCREEPER (X. fuscus)
Singles on the Cedae trail and at the national park were the only records.

SCALED WOODCREEPER (Lepidocolaptes squamatus)
A single bird showed well on the Portao Azul excursion.

GIANT ANTSHRIKE (Batara cinerea)
A pair showed well on the high altitude excursion.

LARGE-TAILED ANTSHRIKE (Mackenziaene leachii)
Heard only, on the high altitude excursion.

TUFTED ANTSHRIKE (M. severa)
Heard only, at the wetland reserve on the 22nd.

CHESTNUT-BACKED ANTSHRIKE (Thamnophilus palliates)
Two birds showed well at the wetland reserve.

SOORETAMA SLATY-ANTSHRIKE (T. ambiguous)
One at the wetland reserve on the 22nd was the only record.

VARIABLE ANTSHRIKE (T. caerulescens)
Up to four birds seen on two dates.

SPOT BREASTED ANTVIREO (Dysithamnus stictothorax)
Four were seen at the lodge on the 20th.

PLAIN ANTVIREO (D. mentalis)
One or more pairs seen most days.

RUFOUS-BACKED ANTVIREO (D. xanthopterus)
Heard only, on the Theodora trail and at the national park.

STAR THROATED ANTWREN (Myrmotherula gularis)
Heard on most days in forested habitat, and seen on the 21st and 22nd.

WHITE-FLANKED ANTWREN (M. axillaries)
Two were seen at the wetland reserve on the 22nd.

SERRA ANTWREN (Formicivora serrana)
A pair showed well on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th.

FERRUGINOUS ANTBIRD (Drymophila ferruginea)
A single bird was seen on the Cedae trail on the 22nd.

BERTONIS ANTBIRD (D. rubricollis)
A single bird on the Theodora trail was the only record.

RUFOUS-TAILED ANTBIRD (D. genei)
A single bird on the high altitude trail was the only record.

OCHRE-RUMPED ANTBIRD (D. ochropyga)
A pair on the Portao Azul excursion on the 23rd.

DUSKY-TAILED ANTBIRD (D. malura)
A single on the Portao Azul excursion on the 23rd.

SCALED ANTBIRD (D. squamata)
A single bird on the lodge trails on the last morning.

STREAK-CAPPED ANTWREN (Terenura maculata)
Singles on the Cedae trail and at the lodge on the 20th.

WHITE SHOULDERED FIRE EYE (Pyriglena leucoptera)
One or two birds seen on three dates.

WHITE-BIBBED ANTBIRD (Myrmeciza loricata)
One at the national park on the 25th.

RUFOUS-CAPPED ANTTHRUSH (Formicarius colma)
One at the lodge on the last morning.

BRAZILIAN ANTTHRUSH (Chamaeza ruficauda)
Heard only, at the national park.

SUCH’S ANTTHRUSH (C. meruloides)
Heard only, on the Theodora trail.

VARIEGATED ANTPITTA (Grallaria varia)
Heard only, at the national park.

RUFOUS GNATEATER (Conopophaga lineate)
One at the lodge on the 21st and two at Portao Azul were the only records.

BLACK CHEEKED GNATEATER (C. melanops)
Seen on three dates around the lodge trails.

SERRA DO MAR TAPACULO (Scytalopus notorious)
Heard on the high altitude excursion and two were seen at the national park.

SWALLOW TAILED COTINGA (Phibalura flavirostris)
A pair building a nest was a definite highlight on the high altitude trail excursion.

BLACK AND GOLD COTINGA (Tijuca atra)
One from the Macae de Cima road on the 24th.

HOODED BERRYEATER (Carpornis cucullatus)
Heard only, at the national park and on the Macae de Cima road.

BARE-THROATED BELLBIRD (Procnias nudicollis)
One from the Macae de Cima road on the 24th.

WHITE-BEARDED MANAKIN (Manacus manacus)
At least five at the wetland and a single on a couple of dates at the lodge.

BLUE MANAKIN (Chiroxiphia caudata)
Recorded on all trips into the forest, giving very pleasing views on several occasions.

PIN-TAILED MANAKIN (Ilicuramilitaris)
Single males showed well at the lodge on the 20th and at the national park on the 25th.

SERRA DO MAR TYRANT MANAKIN (Neopelma chrysolophum)
A single bird on the high altitude excursion on the 24th.

YELLOW TYRANNULET (Capsiempis flaveola)
Two at the Portao Azul and heard on the Jacamar excursion.

HIGHLAND ELAENIA (Elaenia obscura)
One at the Portao Azul and one on the high altitude excursion were the only records.

SOOTY TYRANNULET (Serpophaga nigricans)
One on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th was the only record.

OCHRE-BELLIED FLYCATCHER (Mionectes oleaginous)
One at the lodge on the 20th was the only record.

GRAY HOODED FLYCATCHER (Mionectes rufiventris)
One at the lodge on the 20th and two at the national park were the only records.

SEPIA CAPPED FLYCATCHER (Leptopogon amaurocephalus)
One at the lodge on the 23rd and one at the national park were the only records.

SERRA DO MAR TYRANNULET (Phylloscartes difficilis)
A single bird on the high altitude excursion on the 24th.

MOTTLE CHEEKED TYRANNULET (P. ventralis)
Two on the Theodora trail and one on the high altitude were the only records.

PLANALTO TYRANNULET (Phyllomyias fasciatus)
Seen and heard on several occasions.

EARED PYGMY TYRANT (Myiornis auricularis)
One at the lodge on the 20th was the only record.

DRAB-BREASTED BAMBOO-TYRANT (Hemitriccus diops)
One on the Portao Azul excursion on the 23rd.

EYE RINGED TODY TYRANT (H. orbitatus)
One at the wetland reserve and one seen on several dates at the lodge.

HANGNEST TODY-TYRANT (H. nidipendulus)
A pair on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th.

OCHRE-FACED TODY-FLYCATCHER (Todirostrum plumbeiceps)
Singles at the Portao Azul and the high altitude excursion.

YELLOW LORED TODY FLYCATCHER (T. poliocephalum)
One seen on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th.

COMMON TODY-FLYCATCHER (T. cinereum)
A single at the wetland reserve on the 22nd.

YELLOW OLIVE FLYCATCHER (Tolmomyias sulphurescens)
One of the commonest flycatchers being seen or heard almost daily.

YELLOW-BREASTED FLYCATCHER (T. flaviventris)
Heard only, at the wetland reserve on the 22nd.

WHITE THROATED SPADEBILL (Platyrinchus mystaceus)
One or two seen most days around the lodge trails.

BRAN COLORED FLYCATCHER (Myiophobus fasciatus)
Two birds were seen on the Jacamar excursion on the 26th.

CLIFF FLYCATCHER (Hirundinea ferruginea)
