2015 is a special year being our 30 years of birding anniversary. To celebrate we will target certain species rather than aiming for the most number of birds. This will involve seeing 30 special birds to remember 2015. The 30 birds are selected from charismatic bird families. These are waders, pittas, toucans, hornbills, piculets, mannakins, trumpeters, cranes, macaws and nightjars. A careful assessment of what new birds can be seen in what countries considering time of year established that we would go to Peru in July August, Japan in December and Borneo in early 2016.

Tanager tours, (info1@tanagertours.com, www.tanagertours.com) a local Peru company has 3 different tour options and we selected the Remote south east Peru (14 days) plus the Amazon tour (15 days). This seemed to hold the most number of the different families that we had selected. A 30 day birding itinerary was proposed comprising 2 weeks in southern Peru including a week in the remote south-east in the Sina and Sandia valleys in the upper Amazon basin where we planned to camp for a few days. We then moved north to the Cusco area and spent another 2 weeks birding the Manu road and sites in the upper montane forests nearby. With the Australian dollar so low, we wanted to reduce the costs so Miguel advertised on his website for additional birders. He had people interested in the second part of the trip this made it 5 people (us from Australia, 2 from the Netherlands and 1 from Ireland). This proved to be a good option and we saw 365 species, including 77 lifers in the southern Peru leg. We saw all our targets well, except Hooded Mountain-toucan.

Southern and remote SE Peru

13 July – 16 July Arequipa/Moguegua Area

We flew from Brisbane via Auckland and Santiago to Lima. Then we took a flight to Arequipa arriving on 12 July at 9:30pm. For our first night we stayed at a small hotel in Arequipa and in the morning our first bird was the Peruvian Pygmy-owl perched on a power pole outside the hotel. We travelled the Chiguata Road to the lake – Salinas de Agua Blanca which is at an altitude of 4300m. As the wind increased we realized that we would need all our warm clothing. We were pleased to see Andean Avocet, Puna Plover and three species of flamingo. It was a dusty rough road but the scenery was stunning.

Our second night was at Mollendo. We visited a wetland- Lagunas Meijia where we picked up White-tufted Grebe, Pied-billed Grebe and Great Grebe as well as several ducks. At an area of riverine vegetation at El Fiscal we saw 2 racoon like animals running down a bare slope to the vegetation, attracting the attention of a Burrowing Owl. We saw groups, up to 12 of Peruvian Thick-knees in the fields. Birds for the day included Slender-billed Finch, Pied-crested Tit-Tyrant, Grayish Miner, Inca Tern, Sandwich Tern, Royal Tern and Black Skimmer.

We stayed at Ilo to take the boat out for the seabird trip. This was the first time that Miguel had taken a boat from this harbour. Vidal (additional bird guide) and Ciro (cook and guide) were new to seabird trips so it was an exciting time for all of us. At first it seemed that it may be too rough to go out, but by 7am we were on the boat and having breakfast. We had seats tided onto the deck for us to sit on and Vidal and Ciro had the unenviable job of burling. The trip was successful with views of Humboldt Penguin, Black-browed Albatross, Salvin’s Albatross, White-chinned Petrel, Sooty Shearwater, Wilson’s Storm-Petrel, Elliot’s Storm-Petrel, Markham’s Storm-Petrel, Ringed Storm-Petrel, Peruvian Diving-Petrel and 3 cormorants including Red-legged Cormorant. On the way back the wind picked up with white caps and we were keen to back to shore. After the seabird trip we drove about 90km to Moquejua and arrived at 7pm.

On day 4 we climbed up to the high altiplano, (Carumas, Chilota and Puna) where I started to feel a bit fluey, and took an altitude tablet. We had breakfast by the road and started birding for the various puna species – Yellow-billed Teal, Gray-breasted Seedsnipe, Puna Miner, Cinclodes (Cream-winged and White-winged), Andean Tit-Spinetail, Canasteros (Creamy-breasted and Cordilleran) and several Sierra-Finchs and Yellow-Finchs. In the afternoon I started to feel better and could keep up and pay attention to see the Lesser Rhea.

17 July - 19 July Lake Titicaca Basin

Had some breakfast at the hotel in Puna – Hotel Buho at 5:30am and looked for the grebe at the port on Lake Titicaca. Vidal left us to guide for the Dutch couple. Our party was now just 5 and we were settling into a routine. We would arrive at a spot for a meal and then go birding, on coming back the driver offered us a hygienic hand wash and we would sit at the table with Miguel for Ciro to bring us our meal – very civilized. We found the Titicaca Grebe on a small lake at Juliaca where we had our second breakfast in the field. Sugar cane was being grown along the way and we tried some sugar cane stalks, quite juicy to chew on but you have to spit out the pith. There were 3-wheel motorbikes on the roads.

It was pretty driving through the snow covered land then into the Sina valley. By the time we made it to the village it was dark and cold. Miguel knew a lady who was willing to have us stay at her house. It was probably about 0 degrees and we had 5 blankets on the bed. Ciro cooked us dinner in the house and we went to bed to keep warm. For breakfast we had quinoa with fruit and strawberry yoghurt. Birding (day 6) down the road we came across a bird party with Orange-browed Hemispingus and several tanagers. Up the road in the Abra Cuyocuyo we saw Capped Conebill. Abra means pass.

We looked for a bird party (day 7) of the larger birds such as Jays in order to find the Hooded Mountain toucan. Unfortunately the Toucan only made a brief appearance and we did not get satisfactory views. We left the village and looked for the DSP on all the suitable snow covered tundra as we drove back across the pass. As we walked the last available habitat the Poona Snipe appeared then amazingly we stumbled across a single Diadem Sandpiper Plover at the end of the potentially-suitable habitat – tired but relieved. We had great views and some photos, very pleased to see it and in a different area to where most people see it.

The drive to Sandia took us through illegal gold mining areas, and down a long winding one lane road descending from 4600 m which took 2 and half hours. We had to back up to let large trucks pass. It was 7 pm when we arrived tired and dusty and we drove around town to find the plaza and our hotel.

20 July – 26 July Upper Tambopata Drainage

The lush vegetation back into cecropria trees was great after the dry altiplano. We birded the roads in Sandia Valley and saw lots of tanagers, Dusky-green and Crested Oropendolas. We drove back up the dirt road (Abra Marroncunca) and took a small trail to a site for the Scimitar-winged Piha. After much playing of the tape we drove home scaring a nightjar off the road. We tried for the nightjar the next day leaving our hotel early to be on the road at 5am but there were 3 motorbikes already on the road. In the afternoon we tried for the piha again – no luck. Other birds included White-flanked Antwren, Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Yungas Manakin and Andean Solitaire. Our sites were Porompata valley, Lumpucurri and Abra Marroncunca.

On day 10 we birded Yanahuay to Curva Algare road. We spent most of the day driving to get to Putina Punku as the road was under major repair with several creek crossings being worked on. This meant that the road had to be closed all day. Luckily we just go through only waiting 30 minutes at one new culvert. Good birds were 5 Military Macaws, Black-faced Anthrush and White-browed Antbird and Bar-breasted Piculet. We tried to get a car on the other side of the river, to bird the Palmerani Track but this proved difficult. Ciro arranged two motorbikes but there was no foot pegs on Dave’s bike. We then took a car back arranged by our driver. We had a second night at Putina Punku, it was then travelling back to Yanajuaya and Sandia. The stretch to Yanahuaya provided good views of Versicolored Barbet and Chestnut-eared Aracari and we saw Ash-throated Antwren. It was nice to see 2 Blue-banded Toucanets, Torrent Duck and White-capped dippers on the way back to Sandia. Ciro cooked dinner for us in Sandia at the nearby café and we had a purple corn desert. On day 14 we were in polyeptis forest in Lampa, back to the cold dry air. We marveled at a church in the town square built in the 1500’s. At Cuyocuyo Pass above Lampa we got brief views of Giant Conebill. Other highlights were 4 Andean Condors at close range and Puna Tapaculo on the road out of the Sandia valley. In Cusco, we were joined by Aidan Kelly from Ireland for the next 2 wk tour. This will be reported in a separately.
