I've been birding twice in Uganda, both trips were led by Johnny Kamugisha at http://www.birdinginparadise.com/. Johnny has evolved from a good guide in 2012 to a superb one in 2017. I'll swear he knows the birds by address; we were buzzing through Bwindi NP when he said “Stop, there’ll be a Purple-breasted Sunbird in that tree.” Bingo, there it was. Ditto in Queen Elizabeth NP: we're driving along, take a turn, stop, and he says “ Check that tree, there are lions lying on a limb” and there they are.
Uganda birding is superb. In 2012, we saw 454,species in two weeks. Roads are good, lodges are mostly excellent and food is fine. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful. The higher altitude parts of the country, where we visited, have a comfortable climate, neither too hot nor too cold. The frosting on the cake is the presence of mammals everywhere, we saw 9 species of primates and many other mammals without trying. Do not miss the chance to see Gorillas and Chimps.
Uganda does have some problems. Kampala traffic is awful. Roads are pretty good but there are speed bumps and security stops everywhere. You're lucky if you can average 30 miles an hour just driving a highway.
Our quick, one week 2017 trip concentrated on primates, trekking to see both chimps and gorillas. We saw the chimps in lovely Kibale NP where we saw dozens of bird species at excellent Chimpanzee guest house and nearby Bigodi Swamp. We saw the gorillas in spectacular Bwindi NP along many more birds. Finally we saw even more birds in the drier habitat of Lake Mburo NP. We saw 111 species in July of 2017 on this short primate oriented trip.
In November of 2012 we saw 454 species in two weeks of intensive birding. We found the Shoebill and many other water birds in Mabamba Swamp, clouds of Bee-eaters in Murchison Falls NP, and over 50 species of land birds in Budongo Forest Reserve — Royal Mile. (The lodge here was the only second rate place we stayed.). Finally we connected with the route of the other trip at Kibale.
I've also birded Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Brazil and Peru. They are great but do not match Uganda in comfort, variety of birds or variety of other wildlife.
