ITINERARY

October 4th. - Early start to drive from Lima (Miraflores Hotel) to Villa Marshes, we did cover sand banks and sea shores. Walk by the reeds walk-way near the park station. Continue to Pucusana fishing port with boat ride included, also one stop at San Pedro Lake and ending with a short walk at Rio Lurin.

October 5th. - After breakfast drive to airport and flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, to the southern lowland rainforest. We transferred to Infierno community and to the Tambopata river port. We continued by boat to Explorer’s Inn along the rio Tambopata.

October 6th, 7th and 8th. - Early morning starts; Activities included the parrot clay lick, Main Trail to Canopy Tower (terra firme forest), the second growth and floodplain forest, and the Tres Chimbadas lake with bamboo forest included. Also, lodge garden where many common birds concentrate.

October 9th. - Early morning bird walk, by mid-morning we transferred by boat to Collpas Tambopata Inn, up along the rio Tambopata.

October 10th. - Early start by boat to Collpa Chuncho into the Tambopata National Reserve, nice breakfast included with spectacular parrots and macaws activity. After this marvellous show of hundreds of parrots, we transferred by boat back to Explorer’s Inn.

October 11th and 12th. - More lodge garden, terra firme trail, flood plain forest and riverine forest. The heat of the day was always intense, sending us back to the lodge to rest and refresh with delicious lemonade and Chicha morada drink.

October 13th. - Departure to Puerto Maldonado, after dropping luggage we went to Cachuela road (open fields and second growth forest), easy birding with no traffic.

October 14th. - Early start to Collpa Cachuela, we went to La Pastora road in search for the two key Jacamars (Purus and White-throated), after that we went to La Colina for the (Mauritia Palms) to look for Palmcreeper.

October 15th. - Early morning short birding, then to the airport for departure to Lima.

SPECIES LIST

TINAMOUS (Tinamidae)

Great Tinamou – Tinamus major. Heard only.

White-throated Tinamou – Tinamus guttatus. Heard only.

Undulated Tinamou – Crypturellus undulatus. Heard only.

SCREAMERS (Anhimidae)

Horned Screamer – Anhina cornuta. Three individuals found on the bank near Tres Chimbadas lake in the Rio Tambopata.

DUCKS (Anatidae)

Orinoco Goose – Oressochen jubata. Single individual seen on our way back from Collpa Chuncho.

Muscovy Duck – Cairina moschata. One male and two females seen on the sand bank at Collpa Chuncho.

White-cheeked Teal – Anas bahamensis. Severals seen at Villa Marshes, right at biggest pond and near the sea.

Cinnamon Teal – Anas cyanoptera. Five seen at Villa Marshes, by the big pond.

Andean Duck – Oxyura ferruginea. One male and two females seem in the interior of Villa Marshes, by the small ponds and hidden in the reeds.

CHACHALACAS, GUANS & CURASSOWS (Cracidae)

Speckled Chachalaca – Ortalis guttata. Common at Explorer’s Inn.

Spix ́s Guan – Penelope jacquacu. Very common around the lodge garden in Explorer ́s Inn, key species for indicating hunting activity.

Blue-throated Piping-Guan – Pipile cumanensis. An adult with a chick found along the Sunset Trail, aslo common at Explorer’s inn.

GREBES (Podicipedidae)

Pied-billed Grebe – Podilymbus podiceps. Common at Villa marshes, by main ponds.

Great Grebe – Podiceps major. Four individuals seen at main pond at Villa Marshes. ENDEMIC.

BOOBIES (Sulidae)

Peruvian Booby - Sula variegate. Very common at Pucusana.

Blue-footed Booby - Sula nebouxii. Two single individuals seen at Pucusana, sitting by rocky cliff.

CORMORANTS (Phalacrocoracidae)

Neotropic Cormorant - Phalacrocorax brasilianus. Common in Pucusana and common in Tambopata river, especially at dry season.

Guanay Cormorant – Phalacrocorax bougainvillii. Common in Pucusana.

Red-legged Cormorant – Phalacrocorax gaimardi. About ten in Pucusana, not too easy to distinguish from a moving boat!

DARTERS (Anhingidae)

Anhinga - Anhinga anhinga. Common along the Tambopata river and Tres Chimbadas lake.

PELICANS (Pelecanidae)

Peruvian Pelican - Pelecanus thagus. Very common at Pucusana.

HERONS (Ardeidae)

Rufescent Tiger-Heron - Tigrisoma lineatum. An adult very well seen from the catamaran at the Tres Chimbadas lake.

Cocoi Heron - Ardea cocoa. Very common in the Tambopata river.

Great Egret - Casmerodius albus. Common along rio Tambopata shores and banks and Villa Marshes.

Snowy Egret - Egretta thula. Common at rio Tambopata and frequently at Villa Marshes.

Little Blue Heron – Egretta caerulea. One single adult individual seen at Villa Marshes.

Cattle Egret - Bubulcus ibis. Very common around Puerto Maldonado and frequently at Rio Tambopata near the Tres Chimbadas lake.

Striated Heron - Butorides striatus. Couple seen at Villa Marshes.

Capped Heron - Pilherodius pileatus. Two individuals seen along rio Tambopata near Collpa Chuncho.

Black-crowned Night-Heron - Nycticorax nycticorax. Fairly common at Villa Marshes, seen by main pond.

IBISES (Threskiornithidae)

Puna Ibis – Plegadis ridwayi. About twenty-five seen at San Pedro lake near Pucusana.

NEW WORLD VULTURES (Cathartidae)

Black Vulture - Coragyps atratus. Common and widespread.

Turkey Vulture - Cathartes aura. The Amazonian race seems common along Cachuela road, but Pacific race seen at Pucusana.

Greater Yellow-headed Vulture - Cathartes melambrotus. Common along Tambopata River.

King Vulture - Sarcoramphus papa. Several soaring while traveling on boat at the Tambopata river.

OSPREY (Pandionidae)

Osprey - Pandion haliaetus. One flying over the Tres Chimbadas lake.

HAWKS, EAGLES AND KITES (Accipitridae)

Black Hawk-Eagle - Spizaetus tyrannus. One sitting on the river bank, not too far from Collpa Chuncho.

Double-toothed Kite - Harpagus bidentatus. Flying over the Tres Chimbadas lake.

Plumbeous Kite - Ictinia plumbea. Common along Tambopata river.

Slate-colored Hawk - Buteogallus schistaceus. Flying accros the Tres Chimbadas lake, also one seen from Explorer’s Inn garden.

Roadside Hawk - Rupornis magnirostris. Common.

Harris's Hawk - Parabuteo unicinctus. One seen at Villa Marshes.

Gray-lined Hawk - Buteo nitidus. First day on our way to Explorer’s Inn, seen perched.

Sungrebe - Heliornis fulica. Two seen at Tres Chimbadas lake.

Pale-winged Trumpeter - Psophia leucoptera. A group of eight seen at main trail in Explorer’s Inn.

Peruvian Thick-knee - Burhinus superciliaris. Two seen on a sand bank, next to the sea in Villa Marshes.

STILTS AND AVOCETS (Recurvirostridae)

Black-necked Stilt - Himantopus mexicanus. About ten seen on a sand bank, next to the sea in Villa Marshes.

OYSTERCATCHERS (Haematopodidae)

Blackish Oystercatcher - Haematopus ater. Several seen at Pucusana, by the rock and cliffs.

American Oystercatcher - Haematopus palliates. About ten seen on a sand bank, next to the sea in Villa Marshes.

PLOVER AND LAPWINGS (Charadriidae)

Black-bellied Plover - Pluvialis squatarola. Six seen on a sand bank, next to the sea in Villa Marshes.

Southern Lapwing - Vanellus chilensis. One seen along the road, between Infierno community and Puerto Maldonado.

Semipalmated Plover - Charadrius semipalmatus. Couple dozen seen on a sand bank, next to the sea in Villa Marshes.

Killdeer - Charadrius vociferus. Two seen on a sand bank, next to the sea in Villa Marshes.

JACANAS (Jacanidae)

Wattled Jacana - Jacana jacana. One seen on the sand bank near Collpa Cachuela in the Rio Madre de Dios.

SANDPIPERS AND ALLIES (Scolopacidae)

Ruddy Turnstone - Arenaria interpres. About twenty seen on a sand bank, next to the sea in Villa Marshes and several more in Pucusana.

Surfbird - Calidris virgata. Several seen at Pucusana by the rocky area.

Sanderling - Calidris alba. Ten seen at the sand bank, next to the sea in Villa Marshes.

Wilson's Phalarope - Phalaropus tricolor. Dozens seen at san Pedro lake near Pucusana.

Spotted Sandpiper - Actitis macularius. Four seen in Villa Marshes and one also seen along the Tambopata river.

Greater Yellowlegs - Tringa melanoleuca. Single individual seen at Villa Marshes.

Lesser Yellowlegs - Tringa flavipes. Three seen at Villa Marshes.

GULLS, TERNS AND SKIMMERS (Laridae)

Gray-hooded Gull - Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus. About forty seen at Villa Marshes.

Gray Gull - Leucophaeus modestus. Two dozen seen at Villa Marshes.

Belcher's Gull - Larus belcheri. Twenty seen at Villa Marshes.

Kelp Gull - Larus dominicanus. Common.

Large-billed Tern - Phaetusa simplex. One seen along the Tambopata river.

Inca Tern - Larosterna inca. Common along Pacific coast in Lima.

PIGEONS AND DOVES (Columbidae)

Rock Pigeon - Columba livia. Common.

Pale-vented Pigeon - Patagioenas cayennensis. Common at the Tres Chimbadas lake.

Scaled Pigeon - Patagioenas speciose. Fourteen seen at Collpa Cachuela.

Ruddy Ground-Dove - Columbina talpacoti. Common along Cachuela road.

Gray-fronted Dove - Leptotila rufaxilla. Two seen on the trail to Tres Chimbadas lake.

Pacific Dove - Zenaida meloda. Common in Lima area.

Croaking Ground-Dove - Columbina cruziana. Several seen at rio Lurin site.

HOATZIN (Opisthocomidae)

Hoatzin - Opisthocomus hoazin. Common and residents at Tres Chimbadas lake.

CUCKOOS (Cuculidae)

Greater Ani - Crotophaga major. Common in Tambopata area.

Smooth-billed Ani - Crotophaga ani. Common in Lima and Puerto Maldonado.

Groove-billed Ani - Crotophaga sulcirostris. Four seen at San Pedro lake near Pucusana.

Squirrel Cuckoo - Piaya cayana. Common at the Explorer’s Inn garden.

OWLS (Strigidae)

Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl - Megascops watsonii. One seen and common at the Explorer’s Inn garden.

NIGHTJARS AND ALLIES (Caprimulgidae)

Sand-colored Nighthawk - Chordeiles rupestris. Couple seen at rocky area near Tres Chimbadas lake, common at dusk and flying along the Tambopata river.

Common Pauraque - Nyctidromus albicollis. Common at the Explorer’s Inn garden.

Ladder-tailed Nightjar - Hydropsalis climacocerca. Several seen along the Tambopata river.

POTOOS (Nyctibiidae)

Great Potoo - Nyctibius grandis. Heard only.

SWIFTS (Apodidae)

Gray-rumped Swift - Chaetura cinereiventris. Six flying over the Collpa Chuncho.

Pale-rumped Swift - Chaetura egregia. Two flying over the Collpa Chuncho.

Fork-tailed Palm-Swift - Tachornis squamata. Several seen at La Colina palm swamp, near Puerto Maldonado.

HUMMINGBIRDS (Trochilidae)

White-bearded Hermit - Phaethornis hispidus. Seen one at trail to Tres Chimbadas lake.

Gould's Jewelfront - Heliodoxa aurescens. Seen two at diferent sites at Explorer’s Inn.

Long-billed Starthroat - Heliomaster longirostris. One seen along main trail, high in canopy at Explorer’s Inn.

Blue-tailed Emerald - Chlorostilbon mellisugus. One seen at Explorer’s Inn.

Fork-tailed Woodnymph - Thalurania furcate. Common in the garden of Explorer’s Inn.

Amazilia Hummingbird - Amazilia amazilia. One seen at the Hotel in Lima.

Black-tailed Trogon - Trogon melanurus. Common at Explorer’s Inn garden.

Green-backed Trogon - Trogon viridis. Only one seen along the main trail at Explorer’s Inn.

Amazonian Trogon - Trogon ramonianus. Couple seen in different locations at Explorer’s Inn.

Amazonian Motmot - Momotus momota. Two seen along main trail at Explorer’s Inn.

Rufous Motmot - Baryphthengus martii. A few seen along main trail at Explorer’s Inn, seems common.

Broad-billed Motmot - Electron platyrhynchum. One seen at Tapir trail at Explorer’s Inn.

Ringed Kingfisher - Megaceryle torquata. One seen at Tres Chimbada lake.

Channel-billed Toucan - Ramphastos vitellinus. One seen along the Terra Firme trail in Explorer’s Inn.

Yellow-tufted Woodpecker - Melanerpes cruentatus. Common at Explorer’s Inn.

Cream-colored Woodpecker - Celeus flavus. Heard only.

Lineated Woodpecker - Dryocopus lineatus. Seen one at Colpa Chuncho.

Red-necked Woodpecker - Campephilus rubricollis. Seen two in differents sites at Explorer’s Inn.

Black Caracara - Daptrius ater. One seen along rio Tambopata.

Cobalt-winged Parakeet - Brotogeris cyanoptera. Common at Collpa Chuncho.

Blue-headed Parrot - Pionus menstruus. Large number on daily visit at Collpa Chuncho.

Yellow-crowned Parrot - Amazona ochrocephala. Several visit Collpa de Loros at Explorer’s Inn, also at Collpa Chuncho.

Mealy Parrot - Amazona farinose. Common at Collpa Chuncho.

Pacific Parrotlet - Forpus coelestis. About six seen at rio Lurin near Pucusana in Lima.

Orange-cheeked Parrot - Pyrilia barrabandi. Common in Collpa Chuncho.

White-bellied Parrot - Pionites leucogaster. Several seen along main trail in Explorer’s Inn and a few at Collpa Chuncho.

Scarlet Macaw - Ara macao. Common on daily visit at Collpa Chuncho by the Tambopata river.

Red-and-green Macaw - Ara chloropterus. Common on daily visit at Collpa Chuncho by the Tambopata river.

Chestnut-fronted Macaw - Ara severus. Common at Explorer’s Inn garden and Rio Tambopata, also at Collpa Chumcho and Collpa Cachuela.

Plain-throated Antwren - Isleria hauxwelli. Common in Explorer’s Inn, seen in most trails.

White-flanked Antwren - Myrmotherula axillaris. Four seen in different sites in Explorer’s Inn.

Dusky-throated Antshrike - Thamnomanes ardesiacus. Seen with mixed flocks at Explorer’s Inn.

Spot-winged Antshrike - Pygiptila stellaris. Heard only.

Yellow-breasted Warbling-Antbird - Hypocnemis subflava. One seen at Collpas Tambopatas Inn, at the bamboo forest. Range Restricted.

White-browed Antbird - Myrmoborus leucophrys. Common at Explorer’s Inn.

Chestnut-tailed Antbird - Sciaphylax hemimelaena. One seen along the bamboo trail at Explorer’s Inn.

Goeldi's Antbird - Akletos goeldii. Heard only, Range Restricted.

Many-colored Rush Tyrant - Tachuris rubrigastra. Common at Villa Marshes, Beautifully colored bird!

Yellow-browed Tody-Flycatcher - Todirostrum chrysocrotaphum. Two seen at Explorer’s Inn trails.

Drab Water-Tyrant - Ochthornis littoralis. Common along the Tambopata river.

Vermilion Flycatcher - Pyrocephalus rubinus. Several seen at rio Lurin near Pucusana in Lima.

Short-crested Flycatcher - Myiarchus ferox. Two seen at Explorer’s Inn garden, seems resident here.

Lesser Kiskadee - Pitangus lictor. One seen at Collpa Cachuela near Puerto Maldonado.

Boat-billed Flycatcher - Megarynchus pitangua. Two seen at Explorer’s Inn garden.

Social Flycatcher - Myiozetetes similis. Common.

Gray-capped Flycatcher - Myiozetetes granadensis. Two seen at Explorer’s Inn.

Screaming Piha - Lipaugus vociferans. Common in most trails at Explorer’s Inn.

Purple-throated Cotinga - Porphyrolaema porphyrolaema. A group of six seen along main trail to the canopy tower in Explorer’s Inn.

Bare-necked Fruitcrow - Gymnoderus foetidus. Two seen from the garden at Explorer’s Inn.

Band-tailed Manakin - Pipra fasciicauda. Two seen in different sites at Explorer’s Inn.

Black-tailed Tityra - Tityra cayana. Common around the garden at Explorer’s Inn.

Black-crowned Tityra - Tityra inquisitor. One seen at the Collpa Chuncho.

Red-eyed Vireo - Vireo olivaceus. One seen by sunset trail with a mixed flock.

Purplish Jay - Cyanocorax cyanomelas. One seen at Collpa Chuncho and another at Collpa Cachuela. Range Restricted.

Violaceous Jay - Cyanocorax violaceus. Common at Explorer’s Inn.

Blue-and-white Swallow - Pygochelidon cyanoleuca. Two seen at Villa Marshes.

White-banded Swallow - Atticora fasciata. Common along rio Tambopata.

Southern Rough-winged Swallow - Stelgidopteryx ruficollis. Common along rio Tambopata.

Brown-chested Martin - Progne tapera. Six seen along Cachuela road, near Puerto Maldonado.

Scaly-breasted Wren - Microcerculus marginatus. One seen at main trail to the canopy tower at Explorer’s Inn.

House Wren - Troglodytes aedon. Common in Lima and Tambopata.

Thrush-like Wren - Campylorhynchus turdinus. About eight seen at dusk taking a dust bath at the garden in Explorer’s Inn.

Moustached Wren - Pheugopedius genibarbis. Couple seen at sunset trail in Explorer’s Inn. Range Restricted.

Buff-breasted Wren - Cantorchilus leucotis. Two see at Collpa Cachuela, near Puerto Maldonado.

Flame-crested Tanager - Tachyphonus cristatus. Two perched in the canopy, seen along main trail in Explorer’s Inn.

Silver-beaked Tanager - Ramphocelus carbo. Common at Explorer’s Inn.

Blue-gray Tanager - Thraupis episcopus. Common at Explorer’s Inn.

Turquoise Tanager - Tangara Mexicana. Three seen at the garden in Collpas Tambopata Inn.

Green-and-gold Tanager - Tangara schrankii. One seen in the canopy by main trail in Explorer’s Inn.

Swallow Tanager - Tersina viridis. One single seen at Collpa Cachuela, near Puerto Maldonado.

Black-faced Dacnis - Dacnis lineata. Two seen from the garden at Explorer’s Inn.

Green Honeycreeper - Chlorophanes spiza. Two seen in the canopy along bamboo trail at Explorer’s Inn.

Blue-black Grassquit - Volatinia jacarina. Common along Cachuela road, near Puerto Maldonado.

Double-collared Seedeater - Sporophila caerulescens. Common along Cachuela road, near Puerto Maldonado.

Bananaqui - Coereba flaveola. Two seen at rio Lurin site, near Pucusana in Lima.

Streaked Saltator - Saltator striatipectus. Two seen at rio Lurin site, near Pucusana in Lima.

Yellow-browed Sparrow - Ammodramus aurifrons. Common along rio Tambopata and also around Puerto Maldonado.

TROUPIALS AND ALLIES (Icteridae)

Red-breasted Meadowlark - Sturnella militaris. Two seen along Cachuelas road, near Puerto Maldonado

Russet-backed Oropendola - Psarocolius angustifrons. Common in most sites in the Tambopata area.

Olive Oropendola - Psarocolius bifasciatus. Four seen along main trail to canopy tower and a couple more flying over the trees at Chinbadas lake.

Crested Oropendola - Psarocolius decumanus. Only one seen flying over the garden at Explorer’s Inn.

Yellow-rumped Cacique - Cacicus cela. Common in most sites in the Tambopata area.

Red-rumped Cacique - Cacicus haemorrhous. Two seen along main trail to canopy tower at Explorer’s Inn.

Orange-backed Troupial - Icterus croconotus. A pair seen protecting a nest, at the garden of Explorer’s Inn.

Shiny Cowbird - Molothrus bonariensis. Four seen at San Pedros lake, near Pucusana in Lima.

Giant Cowbird - Molothrus oryzivorus. Several seen near capybaras, along the Tambopata river.

Scrub Blackbird - Dives warczewiczi. Two seen at San Pedros lake, near Pucusana in Lima.

FINCHES (Fringillidae)

Golden-bellied Euphonia - Euphonia chrysopasta. Three seen in the canopy along tapir trail at Explorer’s Inn.

Hooded Siskin - Spinus magellanicus. Single one seen at rio Lurin, near Pucusana in Lima.

White-vented Euphonia - Euphonia minuta. About five seen at Pastora port, near Puerto Maldonado.

OLD WORLD SPARROWS (Passeridae)

House Sparrow - Passer domesticus. Three seen by Pucusana in Lima and another two seen in Puerto Maldonado.
