By Bas van den Boogaard

In spring 2002 Bas van den Boogaard, Rob Bouwman, Antonio Mendoza, Edwin de Weerd, Hans Vrolijk and Henk Hendriks visited China for a birding trip to the famous Happy Island, on the Chinese east coast. Several members of the group had limited vacation time available, therefore our stay lasted only for two weeks (between April 28th and May 12th). However, a good number of species were seen (198 in total), the quality of the species was even better.

Due to time constrains our itinerary was quite simple: we concentrated our trip on birding at Happy Island. During our trip we visited the following sites:

· After arrival at Beijing airport (April 28th), we were able to do a bit of birding in the afternoon in Beidaihe. At Lotus Hills, we saw our only two Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker, and of course we got our first taste of oriental birding!

· The following day (April 29th), we went to the Great Wall site near Shanhaiguan, the see several (semi) endemics / localised species. We saw all the possible key species there, except for Yellow-bellied Tit.

· On May 30th, we went down to Happy Island, which is a few ours drive from Beidaihe. En route, with Jesper Hornskov's local knowledge, we visited several agricultural and freshwater sites. We aimed at seeing species which would be hard to see on Happy Island. We succeed quite well with a group of 73 Little Wimbrels and several Long-toed Stints, among others. In the afternoon, we took the boat to Happy Island.

· From April 30th till May 11th, we stayed on Happy Island. Not much else to do then just birdwatching, photographing and enjoying the food!

All logistics where arranged through Jesper Hornskov (goodbird@heinfo.net), who lives in Beidaihe and has good knowledge of the local situation. Transportation was either with a minibus or local taxis. On the mainland, we stayed at good hotels, on the island accommodation was more primitive.

I would like to thank all my travel companions for having a very good time during the trip. It was just a lot of fun! Same thing accounts for Pauli, Martti, Björn and Johann, adding that well know flavour of international birding. Second, I would like to thank Jesper for the excellent arrangements that he made for us. Third, I would like to thank Johann for finding the Spoon-billed Sandpipers, that was truly the bonus of the trip.

For more information about our trip, the birds we have seen or just general information on birding the Beidaihe / Happy Island area, you can contact me on 2bunnys@hetnet.nl or by phone on (0031)-(0)71-5136445 (the Netherlands).

Species Lists

The following list is based on the sequence according to Robson 2000 (A field guide to the birds of South East Asia). Some taxonomic changes published in Dutch Birding are used (e.g. the yellow wagtails and Azure-winged Magpie). Most species were seen by all the members of the group, some only by a lucky few.
