As a birder from North America, I understood, and happily anticipated, that a trip to Africa would result in a trip bird list composed almost entirely of lifers (birds that I had never seen before). The fact that I had no experience with Africa, led to the decision to use a budget bird guide, and this is quite the opposite from my normal mode of solo and family travel throughout the Americas. I was really glad that I did get a guide, which came with an expert driver. I had honed in on Ghana as my Africa destination for several reasons. Ghana is a stable free democracy and the people are very friendly. Further, the ecology is tropical, which just happens to be to my liking. Additionally, the country has a very Christian flavor, which may not appeal to some, but which made me very happy. Every taxi, bus, and business seems to have a 'God is Love' label or scripture reference painted on its front, and the accompanying atmosphere in towns is peaceful, while also full of the bustle of life. In fact, I would like to thank the Lord for the happy and safe experience my wife and I had in Ghana, and we were blessed with the people we met on a much needed vacation.

We were expecting the main language to be English, but upon arrival found that the average person in Ghana seems to speak Twi language, not understood by us. Not to worry, our guides and many other persons in Ghana do speak English as a second language. Many people walk for transport in Ghana, and roadside and market life was exciting. A large percentage of persons were dressed in the most colorful garb, the bright cloth patterns contrasting with one another. Mothers carried babies strapped to their backs firmly with a cloth strap, and slightly older children often waved at us in rural settings. Rural communities pumped water by hand, carried many items of daily life on their heads, and often cooked and even occasionally bathed in open-air situations. It was very vibrant.

Anyhow, let me get back to birding. I chose Kwame Brown(kbirdcisticola@gmail.com) as the expert bird guide. He was at the top of the list on ebird for number of species observed in Ghana. Kwame was a great guide for a number of reasons. First, he offered a cheaper price than another well known tour company in the country. His price was $173 US Dollars/day per person. He was much more responsive and flexible to our needs, as we were a small group - it was only my wife and I. I realized upon arrival that Kwame has his trip plan honed extremely well from much experience guiding, and the budget deal included all delicious meals, SUV transportation, and accommodation at decent hotels close to birding areas. He was a master of recorded playback of bird songs, which of course is controversial in birding circles, but did work well. Further, he knew the birds extremely thoroughly, picking up on noises and songs. He was also always knowing what distant flutters were when asked. It was easy to see that he was an excited birder, just like the rest of us, but his domain, the country of Ghana itself, is very well known to him. Also, Kwame was friends with all the people at the gates of the various reserves, and got us in earlier and with better ease than we could ever have done on our own. We managed to see almost every species on the final list up close and well. For me, 362 birds was quite a number to end up with, but he says that, during migration or shorebird season, over 400 is a common number.

He took us first just outside Accra to the Shai Hills reserve (which was better and more interesting than I had imagined), and then to Sakumono Lagoon near Accra, which featured a number of unique marsh birds. Then we headed west of Accra to Kakum National Park. Kakum has a canopy walkway with six separate stable platforms for canopy birding. We enjoyed this very much, and saw a number of canopy birds up close. Then, we birded second growth and farming areas on the outskirts of Kakum National Park, and even went to a reservoir for African Finfoot. We stopped at the Pra River for Rock Pratincole and White-throated Blue Swallow. Later, we headed further west towards Ankasa National Park, stopping at a beach road for some interesting species, and at a pond or two. Ankasa was the wettest of the areas birded, and it rained a bit at times, but we were not overly inconvenienced by weather, despite it being wetter than some times of year. In fact, since it was the off-season in late June, we were more welcome at venues than usual I think. After Ankasa National Park, we headed north up to Bonkro Village, which has a community-maintained patch of forest. This forest hosts White-necked Rockfowl, a bird seemingly always at the nest site. After Bonkro Village, we headed further north to a special location on the White Volta for Egyptian Plover, and then on to the very interesting Mole National Park. Mole was great, with its own suite of birds, and a lot of different kinds of large African animals. Finally, we made the trip back to Accra, stopping for a couple days at a monkey forest, Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary, and at Atewa forest.

For entry into Ghana it was necessary to get a Yellow Fever Vaccination, which we got at Penn Travel Medicine in Radnor, PA. We applied for our Ghana tourist visa through CIBT Visas (cibtvisas.com). We had to fill out a few pages of information and send those along with our passports, which they returned to us with the new tourist visa stamped inside our passports.

Quite a few interesting types of animals were encountered, including: Banded Mongoose, Slender Mongoose, Olive Baboon, Civet Cat, Genet Cat, Green Mamba, African Python (15 feet long), Agama Lizard, Savannah Turtle, Elephant, Kob Antelope, Bushbuck, Waterbuck, Black Duiker, Warthog, Mona Monkey, Green Monkey, Patas Monkey, Spot-nosed Monkey, Black-and-white Colobus, Straw-colored Fruit Bat, Hammer-headed Bat, Striped Grass Mouse (dead), Sun Squirrel, Striped Ground Squirrel, Slender-nosed Crocodile, Nile Crocodile, Water Buffalo, African Dung Beetle (in action), geckos and innumerable beautiful butterflies.

Many of the birds seen were encountered regularly at most of the sites, or at least seen more than once. However, I only include here the best sighting of each species, with its location and date.
