26th May 2019. We assembled in Chengdu, with the opportunity for the earlier arrivals amongst us to do some birding in the park adjacent to our hotel in the cul-tural heart of the city.

27th May 2019. We departed Chengdu at 5am in a bus that comfortably fit all of us and our gear and headed for Longcanggou National Nature Reserve. Starting at about 9am we walked up the paved road in the park (left fork), with the dirt road (right fork that goes to the new panda research centre) being gated and the gate locked, as expected. We walked a 12 km loop up to the top of the paved road, be-ing passed about every hour by an electric bus taking tourists up to the start of the river walk at the top. At the top of the road we crossed over the small rocky river and headed up a dirt road to join the dirt road up the mountain. Here we stared a descent, walking back down for the road for about 5km to the locked gate. Birding in the morning was slow in rather heavy rain and though it continued for the rest of the day, it did become lighter. Our first good bird was a singing male Chinese Blue Flycatcher that John managed to find perched in the understory as it sang back to us. We located two Buffy Laughingthrush by their calls and they showed at a dis-tance. We found some nice mixed flocks and managed to get some to mob us by imitating collared owlet calls. Two flocks had 4-5 Fire-capped Tits, most flocks had a Red-tailed Minla and several Blue-winged Minlas, along with Green-backed and Yellow-bellied Tits. We worked our way through the leaf-warblers, with Large-billed, Kloss’s and Claudias being common, with several singing Emei Leaf-warblers higher up on the trail. The top part of the paved road offered some forest understo-ry birding next to the stream. The forest is mainly broad-leaved with scattered co-nifers. We soon found two spectacular flycatchers, with a beautiful male Ultrama-rine Flycatcher and a pair of Fujian Niltava which were seen by all and caused some puzzlement at first since the female was seen briefly before the male gave pro-longed views. On the way back down a Red-winged Laughingthrush called back to us but did not show. Likewise a Pygmy Cupwing called from the understory next to the dirt road but did not want to be seen. Night at the nearby Hulin Hotel.

28th May. We left our hotel at 5:30am after coffee and breakfast. Steven had ob-tained permission for our small group to drive up the road to the Panda Research Station at Longcanggou National Nature Reserve. We stopped briefly on the way up when Jelmer heard a singing Sichuan Bush-warbler and we we were able to coax the bird out by playing its call and it performed well out in the open. We then drove up to about km 13 and took the left turn on a dead end road as far as we could drive. The side road proved productive, with a Great Parrotbill, and several Emei Liocichla see by most of us. A Red-winged Laughinghtrush gave brief perched and then good flight views for everybody. Many Aberrant, a Brown and a Yellowish-bellied Bush Warbler were singing, and we saw the first of the handful of Vinaceous Rosefinches that we would see during the day. Three of the group saw a female tragopan disappearing on the way back down the side trail. We birded this side road until about 11:30, followed by an early picnic lunch, and then headed up to the top (to the Panda Research Station). We spent a good deal of time looking for Three-toed, Brown and Gray-hooded Parrotbill. We eventually located Gray-hooded and is showered well for all. White-bellied Redstarts sang from the middle of trees and bushes but refused to show themselves. A nice pair of White-backed Wood-pecker and two Darjeeling Woodpecker rounded out the walk. From there we slowly worked our way down, mostly by walking back to the side road at Km 13, which we walked again. This proved very fruitful with a male Temminck’s Tragopan and a female with two small chicks, quickly followed by a male Lady Amherst’s Pheasant that sat on the road for about 10 seconds before running off. We next obtained more views of Emei Liocichla before we headed down the mountain. On the way down some saw another female tragopan, and then everybody saw another male Lady Amherst’s Pheasant that walked slowly along the edge of the road for about a minute before disappearing into the forest. Night at the Hulin Hotel.

29th May. We set off walking from our hotel at 6am having had a simple break-fast. The farmland, bamboo groves and scattered trees produced a few birds. Most notable were a heard-only Chinese Tawny (Himalayan) Owl, several heard-only Chinese Bamboo Partridges, a pair of Ashy-throated Parrotbill that came to us and gave everybody good views, and a Plain Laughingthrush seen by some.

We set off driving at about 7:30 towards Labahe, stopping for roadworks along the way and making sure we reached the closed section before the allotted road-closure time. However, the road was blocked by a huge crane when we reached the place and the roadworkers kept us waiting a while. We checked into the Luming Hotel in Labahe Scenic Area shortly after watching a large roadside troop of Tibetan Macaques and had a quick bowl of noodles each for lunch. By noon we were head-ing on an electric bus up to the top of the road in the park to where the cable car station is located. Some saw a Lady Amherst's Pheasant on the drive up. At the top we walked up the broad stony track a few hundred meters from the cable car sta-tion, hearing Chinese Cupwing, and seeing a fantastic male Golden Bush-robin close to our high point at 2740 m asl. Our first parrotbill here also popped up for brief views: Fulvous Parrotbill. Aberrant Bush-warblers were singing everywhere in the fog and rain and were easily and regularly seen. We then walked slowly down the road working on parrotbills in particular. Bird flocks included the crested form of Coal Tit, Bianchi’s Warblers, White-collared Yuhinas, lots of Black-browed Bush-tits and Yellow-browed and Green-backed Tits, with Sichuan Leaf-warblers and Claudia’s Leaf-warblers as some of the most abundant birds. Long-tailed Minivets were also in most flocks. Two participants who’d wandered ahead led us to our first parrotbill spot on the road with reports of a Great Parrotbill. We tried playing both three-toed and brown, and eventually two Brown Parrotbills came out, one of which gave reasonable views. We had not realized how difficult the identification of these species could be and failed to identify them though we (wrongly) suspected they were three-toed. At another spot we tried to tape out a Chinese Cupwing but it proved unwilling to show. Steven heard Brown Parrotbill calling and they proceeded to come to playback and gave good views. The photos helped clinch the ID for us, with the toe count being definitive. Working lower down the road we had brief en-counters with at least two Black-faced Laughingthrushes, and a flock containing Stripe-throated Yuhina. Finally, some of us saw a Chinese Cupwing, first discovered in the open before it called. Birding slowed down towards late afternoon and we eventually called a shuttle bus that came to get us at around six.

30th May. Birding at Labahe Scenic Area. We left the hotel around 6am and took a private shuttle up to the zip line road and birded this little-used gravel road through lush mixed forest. This road dead-ends at the start of the well-known “old boardwalk”, which we did not dare to walk as it was in a horrendous shape (and it’s fairly high off the ground, so you do not want to fall off or through it). Slaty-blue and Blue-slaty Flycatchers were both heard and seen by all. A mixed species flock contained a singing Hodgson’s Treecreeper that some members of the group saw. Temminck’s Tragopans called in the forest, and two Yellowish-Bellied Bush War-blers were also heard. After this, we returned to the main road and Jelmer, Andy and Leigh had a mixed species flock that included a pair of Grey-headed Bullfinches (a species that was also regularly heard at Labahe) and a single Pere David’s Tit, a bird that we had been seeking for a while. Surprise findings here were a Eurasian Wryneck and an Olive-backed Pipit, and we got good views of a singing Brown Bush Warbler. We next walked the Azalia Lake Trail. We puzzled over a singing thrush with a short, clear song that would not show despite us recording it and try-ing playback. We thought probably Chinese Thrush at the time, but upon checking more recordings later, it became clear that it had unfortunately ‘just’ been a White-tailed Robin. The highlight of the trail was an amazing male Temminck’s Tragopan sat at close range on the trail. We watched it for about half an hour as it climbed up a low tree branch, often calling, and even briefly displaying its blue throat wat-tle! We left feeling wowed and glad that we got such an amazing encounter. A pair of Himalayan (formerly White-browed Shortwing) also showed well at the same spot. We ate a picnic lunch at a pleasant picnic area in the azalea forest. After lunch we walked down the road further searching in vain for red pandas. Birding was somewhat slow.

In the afternoon, we returned to the hotel and then continued up the road along the river and parked at a small, new-looking resort just before the defunct White Dove Resort (around 30.17336, 102.47032). We walked up to the end of the road where the Blue Crystal Hotel is located. From the hotel area, trails continue further northeast along both sides of the river (see map in Reeve 2016), which we briefly explored but were eventually kicked out by hotel guards! In the area between and around these two hotels, Streaked Barwings have been reported several times, but we could not find any. A brief flyover Slaty Bunting was seen by some near the White Dove Resort. Along the trails we heard another Slaty Bunting singing and had a Blyth’s Pipit, a Chestnut Thrush, and a singing Indian Blue Robin. Brown Dippers and redstarts were abundant along the rocky river. Tibetan Macaques and introduced Sika and Samba deer in small numbers. One participant saw 3 Reeve’s Muntjac. Night at the Luming Hotel near Labahe Scenic Area.

31st May. We left Labahe at 6am and drove to Erlangshan, where we drove then walked up the road to the open rhododendron and bushy habitat at the pass at about 2900 masl. A first highlight was a couple of singing Rufous-tailed Babblers (Moupinia) that showed well for photos. Working up the road Black-streaked Scimi-tar-babblers were calling in the lower section along with Yellow-streaked Warblers and Grey-crowned Warblers. White-browed Fulvetta was an addition to our trip list. Higher up in the more forested zones we heard at least three Firethroat and every-body saw one for about 15 seconds a few times. As we got higher, up into the open areas, we stopped for lunch, and photographed a perched Himalayan Cuckoo (identification based on the photos since it did not call). The open area towards the pass produced some sizeable flocks with many birds responding to collared owlet calls. The first had five species of rosefinch in it with Dark-rumped, Sharpe’s, Common, Dark-breasted and Vinaceous, including males of each species. We later picked up a single male Chinese White-browed Rosefinch by its sheep-like calls near the pass, and two Pink-rumped Rosefinches while walking down. Rosy and Ol-ive-backed Pipits were common as were Buff-barred and Buff-throated Warblers. Birding back down the road was quieter in the afternoon but we managed to have some views of Indian Blue Robin, a couple more Moupinia and some better looks at some other species. Night at the Erlang Mountain Hotel.

1st June. Today we birded the more forested part of Erlangshan, on the east side of the tunnel. Because the tunnel was closed, we drove around by a longer route, leaving the hotel at 5:30 am and arriving at 7:20 am. We drove in about 3 km then walked up to 2300 masl , then birded back down to about 2 km from the main road. The area contained good mossy broad-leafed forest especially in the middle section, with shorter trees and more bushy areas higher up and more secondary growth lower down. Our main quarry here was Streaked Barwing, but we only man-aged to hear one far down into the valley, while we were stood on the road at a point almost 3 km in from the start of the road. We started the day with a nice Mountain Hawk-eagle and a Spotted Laughingthrush that we found foraging by the road and got to watch for about a minute before it dived back into cover. A Spotted Forktail was foraging along an open ditch alongside the road and gave good views to all. In general, the area apparently contained rather few species, with mobbing flocks containing leaf warblers and Gould’s Sunbirds but few tits and only some of them had either White-collared or Stripe-throated Yuhinas. Ashy-throated Leaf-warblers showed well as did a single Emei Leaf-warbler. The main highlight was a Chinese Cupwing (Wren-babbler) that came into a mobbing flock and sat for about a minute in good view for everybody to see. John also had great views of an up close and personal Pygmy Cupwing. A Little Forktail was also seen well by all near the main waterfall. We left at about 2pm and drove back towards Chengdu to over-night.

2nd June. Jelmer, who was flying from Chengdu to Shanghai in the afternoon, briefly birded the Culture Park in Chengdu, seeing a Yellow-billed (Chinese) Gros-beak, and later visited the local Panda Park (officially known as “Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Park”). Besides hordes of tourists, 6 Chinese Bamboo-partridges, one of which was seen well, 6 Rufous-faced Warblers, an Arctic Warbler and numerous Vinous-throated Parrotbills, Black-throated Tits and Red-billed Lei-othrixes were found here.

The rest of the group left at 05:30 am and were at the tunnel at Balangshan in Wolong NNR by 9:00am on a beautiful sunny day. The area around the tunnel was relatively quiet and we picked up few birds here, most notable being four Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier) that flew past. We drove up to the first high valley lookout with rocky crags towering above us and heard Tibetan Snowcock calling above us. Two birds were soon located and gave views for over half an hour before we left. Rosy Pipits and both Red- and Yellow-billed Choughs flew around. At the next val-ley we stopped at, John succeeded in locating calling Snow Partridges and we had scope views of three. At about the same time a Hog Badger was located high on the slopes nearby. At the pass we found a single Bharal (Blue Sheep) on the ridge. We walked for most of the rest of the afternoon down the high rocky flower mead-ows in the small valleys near the pass. Red-fronted Rosefinches were nearly stepped on before they were found. Rufous-breasted and Alpine Accentors were abundant as were Rosy Pipits and Plain Mountain-finches. A group of about 15 Grandala were hanging around a group of photographers and we joined them for close-up photos. In the late afternoon we returned to the tunnel area and rapidly located both 4 White-eared Pheasant and a pair of Chinese Monal. Verreaux’s Monal Partridges called from the hillside but were not to be seen. A good pickup was a White-winged Grosbeak that perched briefly in a treetop and another Hog Badger on an open hillside. Night in Wolong town.

3rd June. Another sunny day on Balangshan. We left our hotel at 5:30 am and drove up to the tunnel area, pausing on the way to see Giant Laughingthrushes by the road (but no golden pheasants). At the tunnel, up to 6 White-eared Pheasants put on a good show and a male Chinese Monal put in an appearance for a few minutes. Three Chinese Goral walked around on an open hillside and gave ‘scope views for about 20 minutes. We carried on up to the far side of the peak and then walked slowly down for a kilometre seeing two groups of Himalayan Beautiful Rose-finch and our first Alpine Warblers. Plain Mountain-finches were common, but we could not locate any Brandt’s. Lower down we flushed three Tibetan Partridge in a bushy area while trying to view a singing Chinese Rubythroat. We eventually saw one reasonably well. We drove back through the upper tunnel and down to about 2400 masl, stopping in a small wooded valley to pick up our first Chinese Leaf-warblers, a Rufous-vented Tit and assorted other leaf warblers. We walked down lower and heard a singing Firethroat but it remained in thick cover. Things were generally quiet and so we drove back to Wolong and birded the road around the Lama Temple. A nice male Slaty Bunting sat up for us. A singing male Spot-winged Grosbeak sat briefly in a tree. Lower down in the agricultural areas we found an-other Sichuan Bush-warbler and assorted common birds.

4th June. Yet another sunny day on Balangshan. We left the hotel at 5:30 am and birded mid- elevations until about 8am. A highlight was a Chinese Fulvetta, fol-lowed by a male Crimson-fronted Finch and a Maroon-breasted Accentor in the same treetop. A Chestnut-crowned Bush-warbler was seen and sang briefly. We returned to the Snow Partridge and Snowcock areas looking mainly for Brand’t mountain-find and Alpine Thrush but with no luck. We did see a beautiful male Chinese Rubythroat that sat on rocks singing. We proceeded slowly over the pass and down the east side of the mountain, stopping briefly for a White-fronted Red-start and then for a noodle lunch in the first town. Driving towards Mengbishan we passed along a long river valley with tall rocky cliffs in various places. We stopped and saw numerous Crag Martin and Hill Pigeon. Eventually Andy spotted a Wall-creeper flying and we stopped and located a pair that seemed to have a nest and gave everybody good views. We reached the pass at Mengbishan in late afternoon in the rain. Birding was generally quite slow. Between rainstorms we walked down the road and Steven and one lucky observer briefly saw a Sichuan Thrush, with an-other bird singing in the distance. Night in Maerkang

5th June. We birded from the pass at Mengbishan at over 3000 masl down to the Tibetan “village”. Repeatedly walking an upper section, we located three Sichuan Jays and a nice male Three-banded Rosefinch. We also located Grey-crested Tits and Crested Tit Warblers within the bird flocks. The Rosefinch and Tit-warbler were thanks to Summer Wong who we met at the pass (with a client) and Steven shared a walkie-talkie with her so we could share sighting through most of the day. A male Collared Grosbeak was also a welcome find. Not too far from the Tibetan village we found a group of three Chinese Babax that showed nicely for us. Night in Maerkang.

6th June. We started on the road at 5:30am and headed up towards the Tibetan Plateau, headed for our base at Ruoergai. As we reached the plateau, we began to see frequent Black-necked Cranes and Ruddy Shelduck by the road. A birding stop produced White-browed Tit-warbler and White-browed Tit, and (miraculously) a beautiful male White-bellied Redstart showed nicely in roadside bushes.

After a lunch stop for noodles, we stopped by the road to search for Tibetan (Chi-nese) Grey Shrike, which we eventually found some time later. The roadside stop produced Rock Sparrows and our first Ground Tits. As we were driving along Leigh yelled at the driver to stop but was quiet for a minute before telling us he had seen a cat. We got out and sure enough there was a Chinese Mountain (or Desert) Cat a few hundred meters away. We watched it for about 15 minutes while it stalked then pounced on something before walking out of view. During this time somebody spotted our first Tibetan Fox on the opposite side of the road. Driving on we stopped at a site for Przevalski's Finch (Pinktail) in short bushes in a valley. We were all shocked by how pretty and interesting the pinktails were, singing from the tops of bushes, making little song flights, and chasing each other around in the sunshine. There must have been at least 6 and perhaps as many as 15! Driving on we found the road blocked by a large crane that was uprighting an overturned truck. The grassland looked good here, so we hiked past the accident and carried on birding. Redshanks flew around calling, at least eight Citrine Wagtail and a Ti-betan Yellow Wagtail. The bird highlight was three Tibetan Lark, which showed nicely. However another Chinese Mountain Cat stole the day as it crossed the road and remained visible in the grass for about 10 minutes. We also added two Wooly Hare to our mammal list. Night at Jia Rong Hotel in Ruoergai.

7th June. We birded Baxi Forest from just before dawn until 12:30am then had a noodle lunch in a local restaurant before driving to Ruoergai Wetland National Park and Flower Lake, with a stop along the way to search for snowfinches in the grass-lands. Baxi produced no fewer than five Blue Eared-pheasants, foraging in the open grassland as well as a male Blood Pheasant on the open hillside. Sichuan Tits were common, and we ended up seeing at least five Snowy-cheeked Laughingthrush as well as abundant Plain Laughingthrush. Two Chinese Grouse showed briefly be-neath some “willows” for everybody to see. After lunch we headed back to the grasslands of the plateau. A couple of stops produced abundant White-rumped and smaller numbers of Rufous-naped Snowfinch, both of which were seen entering nest holes or had fledged young. We managed to scope two Tibetan Snowfinch on the hill slopes. We carried on to some hillsides near Flower Lake. Mainly we were looking for mammals and succeeded in seeing four Tibetan Gazelle, about a dozen Tibetan Fox including two large headed males and a cat! A distant Pallas’s Cat was discovered high on a hillside sitting on a rock. The light was still sufficient to see the spots on its head as well as the leopard-like color pattern! The rest of the group was rapidly summoned to our windswept and chilly hilltop, and everybody got to see it.

8th June. We birded at Baxi Forest from 6 am until 11:30 am. It rained at times for the first few hours and birding was slow. The best we managed to see was a pair of Blood Pheasant that were briefly on the trail. We headed south to the Gong Gang Ling Pass making a brief stop on the Tibetan Plateau grasslands, picking up more Tibetan Lark, Black-necked Crane, and Ruddy Shelduck. We headed for the area around Gami Temple (near Chuan Zhu Si city, also called Chuan Zhu Temple) and hiked up a beautiful river gorge that was festooned with prayer flags draped across the valley, over the mountains and just about everywhere else. We were in search of Sichuan Jay but found none as we climbed up to a low pass on the sev-eral kilometre loop trail behind the temple. We did see an extremely tame Blue Eared-pheasant that was evidently used to being fed by the local people, and rice was on the trail for food in places. A Snowy-cheeked Laughingthrush was also ex-tremely tame. While driving at a brief stop in an agricultural river valley we found two Collared Crows flying around, the only ones of our trip. Night in Chuan Zhu Si city.

9th June. We left at 5am to arrive at the forest of Gong Gang Ling Pass at day-break. We hiked up a fairly steep trail for a few hundred meters and tried playing the calls of Pere David’s Owl. After trying a few different spots a (presumed) male called back in the distance. We tried to hike down to it but eventually realized it was much further away than we initially thought. We figured out that the road went in that direction, so once back up on the road, we walked downhill for about 500 meters. Andy then spotted the bird calling from the top of a conifer tree in the fairly thick mist. We were able to get closer and get some reasonable views for about 20 minutes. A little later we had views of a Siberian Weasel on the edge of the road and Himalayan Bluetails in the forest edge. A pair of Tibetan Serin were seen by some but only briefly and were our only ones of the trip. We searched long and hard for Sichuan Jays and Prezvalski’s Nuthatches but found neither. We walked a trail lower down looking for Sooty Tits but even these would not cooper-ate. We drove back into town for a late lunch and then headed off towards Tangjiahe National Park, traveling through steep rocky mountain valleys with ex-tensive roadworks and dramatic scenery. Night in PingWu County at Shengshi Holiday Inn Hotel.

10th June. We drove the rest of the way to Tangjiahe NNR arriving around 8 am, in time to get the shuttle bus to the top of the road. With packed lunches in our backpacks, we hiked up the long staircase to the top of the mountain at around 2000 masl. It was interesting being among forest mountain birds again, with these having much more in common with Longcanggou and Erlangshan than those at our recent sites on and just below the plateau. We picked up several Spectacled Ful-vetta on our way up and had decent views of a couple of Indian Blue Robins. At the top there was a good assortment of small birds, but no parrotbills showed, though we heard a Spectacled Parrotbill. After returning to the shuttle bus we drove to our hotel picking up a Golden Takin and a couple of Wild Boar on route. After checking in at the Tangjiahe Hotel (where we stayed for 3 nights) we had dinner and then went out looking for both mammals and Tawny Fish-owl. We spent a good deal of time over the next couple of days searching for the owl in two favoured areas but we failed to see it. We did see a dozen or so Reeve’s Muntjac in a meadow area.

11th June. We started in the dark looking for the fish owl again but to no avail, and continued to bird along the riverside road until lunchtime. It was a slow morn-ing in the rain. We heard a Green Shrike-babbler calling but it was too rainy and dull to get it to come closer with playback. After lunch we headed out on a loop trail from our hotel that ran through nice mixed forest. A Great Spotted Woodpeck-er and a good bird flock containing (among others) Fujian Niltava and a male Zap-pey’s Flycatcher were welcome additions. The rest of the afternoon was slow, with one member of our group seeing a male Golden Pheasant. During the late after-noon we heard that a young Asian Black Bear had been seen and photographed near some beehives and in a meadow across the river. We spent some time looking for this and then the fish owl once more - without success.

12th June. The weather had cleared up and we headed out pre-dawn to search once more for the fish-owl. We failed again so we came back to the hotel for break-fast around 8am before heading out to the shuttle bus to take us to the bottom of the very steep trail up the mountain (as on 10th June). We were at the top by midday and then searched hard for parrotbills, Sooty Tit and Baikal Bush-warbler without seeing them. On the way down, Leigh found a flock of Sooty Tits, which we all got to see. Other trip reports listed this species as plentiful or abundant, so we were surprised to have to work so hard to find it. At about 4:30 pm we arrived back at the bear area, with a plan to search in the vicinity for as long as necessary. We were all slow to get off the bus, feeling tired, and it was our driver who went to speak to a bee guard whose job it was to protect the hives from the bears! The beekeeper started to exclaim something in a loud voice and our driver suddenly yelled and started waving frantically for us to come. Apparently, a young bear had been between us and the river just a few minutes ago. A frantic bear hunt ensued but after about half an hour we had to concede our bear had gone.

We found a place where we could scan the meadows on the slopes across the river and scanned hopefully. A bamboo partridge called and once everybody was there, we decided to call it in. To our surprise a bird came flying in immediately and land-ed in the long grass. A minute or so later this Chinese Bamboo-partridge was visi-ble peering at us from the meadow. Everybody saw it. As we watched, it came fly-ing straight at us and passed by low over our heads! Andy also saw a metre plus long Yellow-spotted Mountain Stream Snake, Opisthotropis maculosa). We tried bear spotting until after 6 and then started to drive back towards our hotel, stop-ping to scan some other meadows for mammals on the way. We spotted a few Wild Boar piglets and adults and were occupied identifying some Chinese Goral and Reeve’s Muntjac, when Marcel yelled “Bear”. He’d been scanning along the river looking for bears when much to his surprise a half-grown Asian Black Bear climbed up the riverbank straight below him! Everybody got some views and photos for those who wanted. Feeling high on bamboo partridge or bear we drove towards our hotel. We screeched to a halt for a Golden Takin on the road, which turned out to be 15 of them - including a calf - on the edge of the forest. After dinner we searched once more for the fish owl, posting ourselves at 200-metre intervals along the river as dusk fell. No joy again for the owl. We drove and spotlighted for about an hour after dark, spotting a Masked Palm Civet, more (or perhaps the same) Tak-in and more muntjac.

13th June. One group member had yet another 4 am search for the fish owl, but again it did not cooperate. We left Tangjiahe NNR early, seeing a male Golden Pheasant on the way out as a parting gift. Before going out we tried for some more birds around the entrance gate. A Black-streaked Scimitar-babbler showed, which was a relief after several unsuccessful previous attempts. A mixed species mobbing flock produced our only Sulphur-breasted Warbler of the trip. We then drove back to Chengdu, with some of us exploring nearby city park which housed an enormous mixed-species heronry. After cleaning ourselves up, we had a good farewell dinner consisting of the local do-it-yourself hot pot.

14th June. International flights back home.
