This was our second trip to Goa - the full report and trip list from our first visit in Nov/Dec 2001 can also be found on the Surfbirds Website. We booked a package through Lunn Poly as the cheapest option. We stayed in Baga at the Hotel Beira Mar which is a popular with birders. This hotel is ideal for anyone simply wanting a room and a bed but the electricity and water supplies are unreliable! Service in the restaurant is slow but the food is generally good and cheap. For lovers of Chinese food the Kim Faa restaurant down the road is excellent. An early morning birding session up Baga Hill or Arpora Forest can be rounded off with a delicious brunch at the German owned Lila's café.

On both trips we spent two nights ( three days ) at the Backwoods Camp in the Western Ghats. This was an essential part of the trip and shouldn't be missed. Advanced booking is recommended. Contact as follows:- email - loven@goatelecom.com - or telephone on either 436109, 9822144939 or 9822139859.

We used the same two taxi drivers, Naresh and Santosh, as on our previous visit. We also used Lloyd Fernandes who has his own bus, provides breakfast and will also organise overnight trips to the Western Ghats.

We can thoroughly recommend all three - not only do they know the sites but also the whereabouts of many of the target species.

Naresh and Santosh can usually be found at the taxi rank outside the Beira Mar.

Lloyd can be contacted on Tel. No. 2276711 or by email at fatimgoa@sancharnet.in

We found the Peter Harris guide to birding in Goa essential both for research before we went and as a valuable aid during the trip.

Our itinerary was as follows:-

7 February - arrived at the hotel at noon then spent the afternoon birding from the terrace which overlooks the Baga paddy fields.
8 February - morning boat trip on Zuari River ( for Collared Kingfisher ) followed by late afternoon at Arpora Forest.
9 February - all day at Carambolim, the lake in the morning then the woods and marsh in the afternoon.
10 February - morning Baga Hill then lazy afternoon birding from balcony and terrace.
11-13 February - Backwoods Camp.
14 February - am at Morji Beach and Arambol - pm Fort Aguada and Candolim.
15 February - am at Panjim saltpans, Santa Cruz saltpans & paddyfields, Dona Paula plateau then pm a walk over Baga fields.
