Short notes on sites

Namdapha NP

Up to now, only altitudes between 390 and 800 m can be visited, where a tropical dipterocarp forest is found. The habitat is in prime quality and birding experience, including trekking and camping, is first class, with great service and excellent food throughout. To see most of the specialities, a longer stay than the 10 days which are permitted would be necessary, but great birds are guaranteed anyway. The largest accessible bamboo area, where many specialities occur, can be found beyond Bulbulia.

Dibru-Saikhowa

Unfortunally, the habitat is largely degraded by grazing cattle and the grassland specialities seem not to occur any more in most areas. The remote Amarpur region, which is said to still be in good habitat condition, could not be visited at the time of our stay due to rebel problems. The area around Rajdan Camp seems to support Jerdon`s Babbler and Marsh Babbler, even though the grassland is not in prime quality any more. Dighaltarang is said to harbour Black-breasted Parrotbill, and the habitat still looks suitable, but birding is rather difficult. Beware of Wild Elephants and Water Buffalos which can turn up at any time!

Digboi Oilfields & Sharia Punj

Both inside the Oilfields and in the nearby Sharia Punj area the lowland forest is in good quality. To enter the Oilfields, a permit must be obtained at Digboi Police Office and it is not possible to enter without a police escort. Locals seem to be familiar with White-winged Duck both inside the Oilfields as well as at Sharia Punj, where they pointed us to a few suitable looking forest ponds. The Ducks seem only to be likely to see at dusk or dawn.

Kaziranga NP

All 3 parts support a good array of wetland and forest species. Best strategy may be to move around by jeep and watch from the roadside and from the watchingtowers. Elephant rides are costly and, apart from close views on mammals, often not very rewarding, even if individual rides away from the tourist bulk can be arranged for an extra tip. Grassland areas suitable for Bengal Florican are few; sites in the eastern range are said to be best, but could unfortunately not be accessed at the time of our visit. For a good site in the central range see under species section.

Panbari Forest

Several visits would be needed to see most of the specialities. A permit must be obtained at the Forest Office, which normally should not be a problem, and a Forest Guard will join.
