Hi Birders,

INTRODUCTION

I have been fortunate to be able to spend several months of each of the past few years travelling and birding, and in planning my trips, have found that it is difficult to find resources that cover travelling from a birders perspective-or birding from a travellers viewpoint. This trip to Brazil was different for me, in that instead of travelling alone, I was accompanied by a close friend, an entomologist who lives in the same part of the Kootenays in British Columbia, Canada.

The purpose of this report is to help other birders who, like us, may have limited funds but enough time to permit an independent trip. We used neither guiding companies, nor local guides, but were able to have a wonderful birding experience, at modest expense. That said, we did not see as many species as would have been possible with guides, and saw fewer rarities, but ended up with a respectable 370 species.

The average daily expense per person for 60 days was $54Can,$44 US, including all surface travel, including 4.5 weeks of car rental, mostly very comfortable shared accommodation, and outstanding food. In addition we purchased a 5 leg VARIG airpass, nominally $500 US, with booking charges,$600 US-this is exceptionally good value, but all travel must be completed within 21 days, so we had to purchase a flight from Rio to Cuiba for $340 US.

LANGUAGE

One of us, PJMcI, has basic Spanish{very!}and Portuguese words and phrases picked up from a CD, but a fair amount of experience in travelling in S America. Although Spanish is not widely spoken, and the similarities between Spanish and Portuguese can be confusing, the people are exceptionally friendly and helpful, and some of the hotel operators spoke English.

SECURITY

Brazil has a reputation for being a dangerous place to visit, and we planned the trip taking this into account. We were able to avoid staying in Rio or Sao Paolo, passing through the Rio bus station on 5 separate occasions. This and other bus stations were very well organised and we felt totally secure; luggage is tagged and carried in a compartment below the bus, and the conductor carefully checks all tags before handing the luggage back. The bus journey felt far safer than in many other S American, African or Asian countries I have visited.

There is no question that you must be careful in the cities-Cuiba, Belem,Porto Velho and Belo Horizonte were places we had to stay that required care, but we had no incidents or attempted thefts. We felt very safe in the rural areas and in the forests but you do need to use commonsense here too. The Lonely Planet was a helpful source. Again I felt much safer most of the time than in many other places, for example, Guatemala, which I birded in Spring 2004.

People don't hassle you, pester you about the price of your binoculars etc. I would not hesitate to return.

CAR/BUS TRAVEL

Busses are fast and comfortable, but you need a car or taxi to get to many of the birding places.

We found car rental easy and not expensive, in spite of what you may have read elsewhere. We just went to a town and eventually found the rental places -a couple of times with the help of the tourist information.

Rental costs were: Cuiba, Fiat Dealer Fiat Palio 98Reals,150kmfree or 128Reals u/l With limited kms anticipated we chose the former.

Belo Horizonte 53Reals,same car,no a/c{OK},u/l kms 2 week rate{Domani}.Gas costs 1.97R/litre.

Maps, essential, are not easy to find-suggest you buy them at airports, as bookstores rarely have them, and gas stations don't."Quattro Rodas Guia Rodoviario" for the whole country, but if only one or two regions you can buy State maps

MONEY-EXCHANGE RATE 2.9 REALS/$ US

We found HSBC the only ATMS that worked for cash advances {Visa,M/C}.Banco do Brasil useless.

You can find HSBC in all larger centres, but not in small towns, Travellers cheques can be changed but only in some banks, again in larger centres. Use major currencies for good rates.

RESOURCES

Lonely Planet for accommodation and general information-a very good guide

Birding Brazil,Brucer C Forrester-excellent for both planning and use on the trip. Bird lists for all 42 sites described. Some information on hotels is not current, but all important birding and most directional info was good.

All the Birds of Brazil, Deodata Souza,2002,English

This was our main guide. Illustrations are variable, many are poor, but most usable. Descriptions brief but good. Range maps usually good, but conservative.

Birds of S.America,Vols 1&2,Ridgely and Tudor-I took the excellent plates from both volumes, and bound them. Descriptions are excellent, too, but too heavy to carry. Covers passerines only.

Birds of S S America,Collins,Illus Checklist. Good illustrations ,brief descriptions for birds up to latitude of Rio, useful for Acciptridae,Waterfowl,Waders etc.

Brazil,Amazon & Pantanal,Pearson & Beletsky.Good illustrations of about 300 of the common birds of the region, with illustrations of mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians - a few insects and plants too.

And the internet of course: try Jeremy Minns, a great supplement to Forrester;for SE Brazil

johnbirding.wolweb.nl and Ray Ziarno. There is also an abundance of commercial sites.

ITINERARY

I will give practicalities and some comments on how we found the birding.Full bird lists are available from Forrester, partial ones from some of the internet sites.Hotel prices are for 2 people, with breakfast, other meals included when indicated.

Sep 6-7 ALTO PENEDO.Near Resende,2.5 hrs by bus from Rio. "Pouso do Marias sem Verona"Nice setting, expensive at 250R {normally 150R},but public holiday and Itatia NP hotels full. Booked in advance, our only time. Birding good in this expensive holiday place in the hills, but would have preferred to spend the time staying in Itatia.

Sep 8-10 ITATIA NP-short distance from Alto Penedo by taxi.Stayed at Hotel Donati,195R inc excellent meals. Very good birding in hotel grounds, and trails around Hotel Simon 20 min walk away. Quieter than Simon, not quite as close to best birding.Tres Picos trail very rewarding. Many tame birds in grounds including several tanager species. Quite a lot of birders, many with guides.

Sep 12-17 PANTANAL,TRANSPANTANEIRA{Flew from Rio to Cuiba, rented car drove, found accomodation by driving in.}Both hotels a few km off the {very quiet} highway.Pousada Rio Claro 42 km past Pocone,210R,3 meals,Hotel Fazenda Santa Teresa 230R 3 meals plus activities-boat etc.Latter hotel past the non -existant but famous Hotel Pixaim, and a small distance past the Holiday Inn on the highway. We really liked this latter hotel

The Transpantineira is raised 3-4 M above the swampy,bushy terrain,and ponds teeming with wildlife line the road edges.You simply find a parking spot and wait-near one of the bridges which occur about every km or so{114 total} is often best as traffic slows down as the bridges are very rickety and single lane.{Traffic was mostly light but there were occasional busy periods}

As well as the Jabiru,American Wood Storks, egrets, ibis, various heron species, hawks and kites, there were hundreds of Capybara and Jacare{caiman}.The pools teem with fish, jumping so it sounds like rain.Trails around the hotels access shrubland where many parrots including the Hyacinth Macaw{Sta Teresa}can easily be seen.A trip on the river will yield 5 kingfishers,boat-billed herons, giant river otters{Sta Teresa}.Passerines are abundant around the hotels and along the trails.A truly tremendous place{though very hot} and I would schedule a larger proportion of the trip here in future visits.

Sep 18-21 CHAPADA DO GUIMARAES.Half days drive, via Cuiba.Hotel Tourismo,85R OK place, may be better choices.Drove to various places recommended by Forrester.Although the birding was much slower than in the Pantanal, there were some beautiful spots,Veu de Nova,Casa de Pedra are very scenic waterfalls and you can follows trails to the base of each and bird in dense first growth.Portao do Inferno provided great views of Red and Green and Blue-Winged Macaws,Helmeted Manakin and Bat Falcon

Sep 23 Pousa CORRUPIRA DAS ARRAS {NW of Cuiba and half way between Jangada and Barra do Bugres S of the highway,on turnoff to a mine, hotel signposted} We missed the turnoff the previous evening and overnighted at Barra do Bugres. The hotel 250R,inc meals, is mainly for local groups and sits on farmland and recently cleared forest. The attraction is a Harpy Eagle nest- a 10 month juvenile was readily found ,a magnificent bird.Much of the area is pretty beat up but the birding was surprisingly good including -3 Tityras,King Vulture,Red-shouldered Macaw,Glossy-backed Becard,Lettered Aracari.

AMAZONIA
Porto Velho. We flew here from Cuiba, bussed to Araquemes,o'nite
Sep 26-30.CACAULANDIA,Rancho Grande.{See L Planet}Can taxi,80R or bus,2 per day, from Araquemes to Cacaulandia, taxi the 7 km from there,or bus to the highway turnoff 5 km before Nova Vida and hope for a ride for the 27 km to the lodge{we did this and paid to ride in the back of a pick-up}Excellent,friendly hotel, full board 170R.Ranch is about 12sq km,half cleared and farmed, the other half uncut, with well marked trails in part of it.The surrounding land has been cleared,so this is a small piece of intact forest. We did not see too many species but there were several parrots including numerous Chestnut-fronted Macaws, and also a Red-fan Parrot, and great views of Hoatzins. The ranch is famed for butterflies,1700 species having been recorded, including 200 not previously described, and butterflies were everywhere, mudpuddling, swarming and just flying around.

Oct2-4 BRASILIA Avoid, and the National Park was closed. And I was sick!

Oct6-9SANTAREM{ALTER DO CHAO}Nice holiday village with great beaches, birding poor

Oct11-13 BELEM{MAJARO ISLAND}Unfortunately had to spend 2 nites in Belem-a 2.5 hr ferry takes you to the island. We stayed at Joanes,"Pousada Ventania do Rio Mar" a wonderful little hotel on cliffs,75R,helpful owners.Canoes up and down a tidal Aguarape access flooded and mangrove forest. Bus tours to see Scarlet Ibis-we rented a motorbike instead,A magnificent sight.

MINAIS GERAIS
We rented a car in Belo Horizonte, and spent the next 2 weeks driving through this beautiful state. Much of the state is close to 1000M elevation, considerably moderating temperatures- a/c is not needed, and nights are cool. The land is hilly, often with cliffs, attractive farmland and dotted with cute European style tile-roofed villages. There is considerable mining activity, the source of the wealthy villages, many of which are centuries old.People were hospitable and friendly

Birding was very good almost everywhere we stopped, the species of course reflecting the environment which,in the areas we visited at least, does not include rainforest. Highways are good, with dirt side roads, distances great and driving between our main birding sites took many hours.Forrester's directions are good, and we suggest looking for routes that minimise the use of small, slow and unsigposted sideroads. On the other hand the exploration can be fun if you are not in a hurry and have lots of gasoline.

Oct 16 SAN SEBASTIO DO OESTE charming little town, about half way along 9km S of highway 262 towards Canastra{The Uberaba road}.No tourists, one hotel "Angelitos",25R.Lots of birds in the fields

Oct17-20 CANASTRA NP.Stayed in pleasant Sao Roque do Minas at "Pousada Fazenda",50R, a great little hotel-really a farm hotel with cows being milked outside the door, marmosets coming for food and a creek with many Masked Water and Cattle Tyrants and other common birds around.

Canastra NP and region gave great birding, although we did not see the Brazilian Meganser and only heard the Brasilia Tapaculo. The area at the source of the Rio Sao Francisco,{a swampy area in the 1500M elevation moorland} was particularly productive,Streamer and Cock-tailed tyrants,Great Pampa Finch,Yellow-rumped Marshbird among the species seen,Spotted Nothura and Red-winged Tinamou closeby.Below the escarpment on which the park is perched, the fertile Sao Francisco valley is full of birds,Curl-crested Jay,White-eared Puffbird,Sooty Tyrunnulet, for example.

Oct 22-23 TIRADENTES,CONGONHAS,OURO PRETO. Attractive and historic tourist towns, great buildings and sculptures,en route to Caraca-well worth visiting.Take care in the forests.

Oct 24-26 CARACA NP E of Belo H .An attractive small NP,mix of forest, grass and moorland. It is great to stay in the large monastary hotel, different levels of accom available,90-120R,basic meals included. Most visitors come to see the Maned Wolf being fed each evening by monks. The beautiful animals are quite wary and don't always show-bit of a scene with people taking flash photos.

Of the trails we tried, the picnic area and forestry road leading downstream from it were most productive, many tanagers including Gilt-edged,Burnished Buff,Brassy-breasted,Ruby-crowned.Swallow-tailed Cotinga,Gray-breasted Sabrewing were also seen. The hotel area is alive with Ovenbirds,Dusky-legged Guans,Kiskadees and other flycatchers calling.

Oct 27-29 CIPO NP Stayed at Pousada Fazenda Lapis Grande 70R,a small very attractive and friendly hotel, about 1 km along the road towards the NP.The best birding, and access to Cipo Canastero terrain, are above town at the first summit{1500M} on the main highway{13.7 km past Hotel Verano},on the right of the road.Note that the road has been modified since Forresters book was written.

The area is private land, but the owner does not object to careful birders. Two research students were studying the very interesting highland vegetation, and the Cipo Canastero. In a 3 month period playing taped calls every day,and knowing the location of about 13 birds,he had only 6 sightings.

Which made me feel better when I was unsuccessful! We did see other specialities, including Hyacinth Visorbearer{among the most beautiful birds I have seen-don't be fooled by illustrations!},Horned Sungem,Gray-backed Tachuri,Buff-throated Pampa-finch {Pale-throated Serra-finch} ,Pileated Finch and others .

Oct 30-31 SERRA DO ORGAOS NP.We dropped the car, bussed to Rio and Teresopolis and stayed downtown. The next day we got a taxi to the park entrance{a mistake we should have gone 3 km more to the dam}It was a Sunday, very busy, with locals and birding groups, and we were too late when we reached the interesting parts of the trail up the mountain.Obviously a good place and worth intensive birding {the forest is dense first growth} but we decided to proceed to the coast for new habitat.

Nov1-5 PARATY and UBATUBA{Serra do Mar} 250km E of Rio,half way to Santos/Sao Paulo on the coast.

A wonderfully scenic area, sand beaches, islands, forested hills behind. Paraty, where we stayed, is a very attractive rebuilt town with whitewashed buildings and old churches, about 50 km from Ubatuba, which is quite basic with a nice beach, but closer to the good birding areas. We wandered around, not seeing too much, then rented a car and visited the Ubatuba area.To reach Capricornio, go right 300M past the roundabout 5km before Ubatuba{"km 45"}.1.1km along this paved road go over a bridge, then right a few hundred M along a sand road to a chain, with "Entrar Prohibido" on it.The cottages to the left directed us to Carlos 100 M further on to the right, the owner-I think. He gave us permission to enter.Several hummingbird feeders arract 8 species,Carlos told us,of which we saw 5.The cocoa plantation is now quite run down, and made attractive walking with border plantation/forest. Birding was quite good but nothing too exciting.

We also birded the signposted "Pica Pau" ecological Pousada /restaurant, which might be a good place to stay, and the summit of the highway 125 to Taubate where the NP is accessible. We did not have time to explore .

This completed a great birding/travelling/exploring holiday and we will return.
