Flights

Flights were booked through Thomas Cook of Fakenham and before 31/12/01 were eligible for a guaranteed rate of £270 (including airport taxes). This applied to the Monday-Thursday flight from Heathrow to Athens, and we were free to travel on any date and for any duration, but weekend flights were £10 pp more and Easter supplements (from l7th-3lst March) add a further £20. This applied to the day flight (with a current connection time of only 1 hr 30 mins) and operates from the new (and thankfully now much improved!) Athens airport.

Accommodation

Accommodation was arranged through Richard Brooks at the Hotel Malemi in Skala Kalloni. The hotel is a family run business owned by George Kapsalis and we were made to feel very much at home. The food was all home cooked and to a very high standard. There was also a good bar and most evenings were spent in the hotel discussing the day’s events amongst other birders, who made up the remainder of the clientele.

3rd April - 17th April (Malemi hotel)

SINGLE ROOM £30 pp
TWIN ROOM £19 pp
TWO ROOM APT FOR4 £17 pp

17th April onwards

SINGLE ROOM £34 pp
TWIN ROOM £2l pp
TWO ROOM APT FOR 4 £20 pp

Money

The exchange rate in April 2002 was 1.58 Euros to the Pound.

Food

Breakfast and Evening meal were provided at the hotel with a buffet style service. Packed lunches were also supplied each day. The food was to a very high standard with as much as you could wish to eat.

Weather

The first week was cloudy most days with a very cool northerly wind. The second week produced cloudless blue skies, but with still with a cool northerly wind. This was ideal for birding.
