The following trip report outlines the itinerary followed by Glenn Hickson who stayed at Serra dos Tucanos Lodge from 3rd - 17th May 2008. Glenn was joined by John & Elaine McCaffrey from the 10th – 17th of May.

Saturday 3rd May - Arrival and Serra dos Tucanos Lodge

Species of note for the day included: Saw-billed Hermit, Sombre Hummingbird, Spot-billed Toucanet, Green-headed, Golden Chevroned, Brazilian and Ruby-crowned Tanagers.

Sunday 4th May – Serra dos Tucanos Lodge grounds.

The morning was spent with a guided walk around the lodge trails. The afternoon was free.

Species of note for the day included: Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Plain Parakeet, Dusky-throated Hermit, Sombre Hummingbird, Black Jacobin, Violet-capped Woodnymph, Brazilian Ruby, Spot-billed Toucanet, Blond-crested Woodpecker, Star-throated Antwren, Blue and Pin-tailed Manakins, and Azure-shouldered Tanager.

Monday 5th May – High Altitude Trail Lower Section.

Showery rain did not dampen bird activity on this high altitude trail with several large flocks encountered during the day.

Species of note for the day included: White-rumped Hawk, Glittering-bellied Emerald, Yellow-browed Woodpecker, Pallid Spinetail, Red-eyed Thornbird, Rufous-backed Antvireo, Dusky-tailed Antbird, Black & Gold Cotinga, Velvety-black Tyrant, Blue-billed Black Tyrant, Shear-tailed Grey Tyrant, Rufous-crowned Greenlet, Chestnut-headed Tanager, and Thick-billed Saltator.

Tuesday 6th May – Cedae trail.

The morning was spent on this trail which is about 5km from the lodge but 300m higher in elevation. The afternoon was free.

Species of note for the day included: Blue-bellied Parrot, Scaled Woodcreeper, Ochre-breasted Foliage-gleaner, Spot-backed Antshrike, Black-cheeked Gnateater, Oustalet’s Tyrannulet, Sharpbill, and Black-throated Grosbeak.

Wednesday 7th May – Bamboo trail.

This local trail is about 10km from the lodge but 700m higher in elevation. NB; Due to the confined nature of the trail it is not suitable for groups of more than 6 people.

Species of note for the day included: Scale-throated Hermit, Yellow-browed Woodpecker, Pallid Spinetail, Sharp-billed Treehunter, Bertonis Antbird, Ochre-rumped Antbird, Rufous-backed Antvireo, Hooded Berryeater, Grey-hooded Flycatcher, White-rimmed Warbler, Uniform Finch and Buffy-fronted Seedeater.

Thursday 8th May – Macae de Cima Trail.

The morning was spent birding along the road to Macae de Cima. The afternoon was free.

Species of note for the day included: Black Hawk Eagle, Plovercrest, White woodpecker, Brazilian Antthrush, and Bare-throated Bellbird.

Friday 9th May – High Altitude Trail Upper Section.

This trail is the service road to some communication aerials situated about one hours drive from the lodge. It is the highest lodge excursion reaching 2200m.

Species of note for the day included: Red-legged Seriema, Plovercrest, Large-tailed Antshrike, Mouse-coloured Tapaculo, Black and Gold Cotinga, Grey-winged Cotinga, Diademed Tanager, Bay-chested Warbling Finch and Serra do Mar Tyrannulet.

Saturday 10th May – Free day

No guided excursions were undertaken.

Sunday 11th May – Wetlands Excursion

After an early breakfast we headed off for the 50 minute drive to a local nature reserve which has an area of lowland forest and some lakes. The afternoon was free.

Species of note for the day included: Tropical Screech Owl, Laughing Falcon, Sooretama Slaty Antshrike, Yellow-lored Tody-Flycatcher, Grey-hooded Attila, and Long-billed Wrens.

Monday 12th May – Theodora trail.

The morning was spent on this trail which is about 10km from the lodge but 700m higher in elevation. The afternoon was free.

Species of note for the day included: Pileated Parrot, Scale-throated Hermit, White-throated Hummingbird, Yellow-browed Woodpecker, White-collared Foliage-gleaner, Giant Antshrike, Slaty Bristlefront, Greenish Schiffornis and Buffy-fronted Seedeater.

Tuesday 13th May – Serra dos Orgaos National Park.

An early start for a full day in the National Park, one hours drive away from the lodge. We spent the first 2 hours in the lower part of the park before driving up to the upper section where we spent the rest of the day.

Species of note for the day included: Rufous-capped Motmot, Yellow-eared Woodpecker, Pale-browed Treehunter, Eye-ringed Tody-tyrant, Sharpbill, Fawn-breasted Tanager and Green-winged Saltator.

Wednesday 14th May – Cedae trail.

The morning was spent on this trail which is about 5km from the lodge but 300m higher in elevation. The afternoon was free.

Species of note for the day included: Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Plain Parakeet, Blue-bellied Parrot, Thrush-like Woodcreeper, White-eyed Foliage Gleaner, Streak-capped Antwren and Black-throated Grosbeak.

Thursday 15th May – Bamboo trail.

This local trail is about 10km from the lodge but 700m higher in elevation. NB; Due to the confined nature of the trail it is not suitable for groups of more than 6 people.

Species of note for the day included: Scale-throated Hermit, Mouse-coloured Tapaculo, Pallid Spinetail, Sharp-billed Treehunter, White-collared Foliage Gleaner, White-bearded Antshrike, Bertonis Antbird, Ochre-rumped Antbird, Rufous-backed Antvireo, Hooded Berryeater, Green-chinned Euphonia and Temminck’s Seedeater.

Friday 16th May – Jacamar excursion.

Without doubt the Three-toed Jacamar is one of the target species of the whole trip. We departed early for an hours drive to where we began the days birding and got back at 6pm just as it was getting dark. A long but rewarding day.

Species of note for the day included: Blue-winged Macaw, Red-legged Seriema, Saphire-spangled Emerald, Three-toed Jacamar, Red-eyed Thornbird, Scaled Woodcreeper, Yellow-browed Tyrant, Streamer-tailed Tyrant, Black-capped Donacobius, and Half-collared Sparrow.

Saturday 17th May - Departure day.

During the trip we had a combined total of 247 species seen with a further
6 heard. A total 93 Atlantic forest endemics were recorded.

Heard on several of the woodland trails.

LEAST GREBE (Tachybaptus dominicus)
Two at the wetland reserve on the 11th.

WHISTLING HERON (Syrigma sibilatrix)
One on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th.

COCOI HERON (Ardea cocoi)
One roadside on the way to the National Park.

GREAT EGRET (A. alba)
Seen in most wet areas along the roadside when on excursions.

SNOWY EGRET (Egretta thula)
Seen on a couple of occasions from the van.

CATTLE EGRET (Bubulcus ibis)
Seen commonly in suitable habitat.

BRAZILIAN TEAL (Amazonetta brasiliensis)
Fifteen at the wetland reserve and ten on the Jacamar excursion were the only records.

BLACK VULTURE (Coragyps atratus)
Seen daily, common.

TURKEY VULTURE (Cathartes aura)
Seen almost daily, common.

LESSER YELLOW-HEADED VULTURE (C. burrvianus)
Recorded at the wetland reserve and on the Jacamar excursion.

TINY HAWK (Accipiter superciliosus)
A single on the Theodora trail on the 12th.

SAVANNA HAWK (Heterospizias meridionalis)
Recorded in small numbers on most excursions.

ROADSIDE HAWK (Buteo magnirostris)
Recorded almost daily in small numbers.

WHITE-RUMPED HAWK (Buteo leucorrhous)
A single on the High Altitude trail on the 5th.

WHITE TAILED HAWK (B. albicaudatus)
Up three seen on three dates.

BLACK HAWK EAGLE (Spizastur tyrannus)
Singles on three dates.

SOUTHERN CARACARA (Caracara cheriway)
Small numbers on several dates.

YELLOW HEADED CARACARA (Milvago chimachima)
Small numbers on several dates.

AMERICAN KESTREL (Falco sparverius)
A single on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th was the only record.

APLOMADO FALCON (F. femoralis)
One over the lodge on the 4th was the only record.

BAT FALCON (F. rufigularis)
A single on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th was the only record

DUSKY-LEGGED GUAN (Penelope obscura)
Up to four seen on three dates.

PURPLE GALLINULE (Porphyrio martinica)
Recorded at the wetland reserve on the 11th.

COMMON MOORHEN (Gallinula chloropus)
Recorded at the wetland reserve on the 11th.

RED-LEGGED SERIEMA (Cariama cristata)
Singles on the high altitude and Jacamar excursions.

WATTLED JACANA (Jacana jacana)
Recorded at the wetland reserve on the 11th.

SOUTHERN LAPWING (Vanellus chilensis)
Recorded almost daily in suitable habitats.

PICAZURO PIGEON (Patagionas picazuro)
Small numbers recorded most days.

PLUMBEOUS PIGEON (P. plumbea)
Ones or twos on four dates.

RUDDY GROUND DOVE (Columbina talpacoti)
Seen in small numbers almost daily.

WHITE-TIPPED DOVE (Leptotila verreauxi)
Heard only, at the wetland reserve on the 11th.

GREY-FRONTED DOVE (Leptotila rufaxilla)
Singles on the Bamboo trail and at the National Park.

BLUE-WINGED MACAW (Primolius maracana)
Four on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th were the only records.

WHITE EYED PARAKEET (Aratinga leucophthalmus)
Four on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th were the only records.

MAROON- BELLIED PARAKEET (Pyrrhura frontalis)
Small numbers recorded in the lodge gardens daily. Also seen on several of the excursions.

BLUE-WINGED PARROTLET (Forpus xanthopterygius)
Three at the wetland reserve on the 11th.

PLAIN PARAKEET (Brotogeris tirica)
Small numbers recorded in the lodge gardens daily.

PILEATED PARROT (Pionositta pileata)
Two on the Theodora trail on the 12th were the only record.

SCALY HEADED PARROT (Pionus maximiliani)
Recorded within the lodge grounds on several occasions. Also seen on several of the excursions.

BLUE-BELLIED PARROT (Triclaria malachitacea)
Two on the Cedae trail on the 6th and a single there on the 14th.

SQUIRREL CUCKOO (Piaya cayana)
Seen or heard almost daily.

SMOOTH BILLED ANI (Crotophaga ani)
Small groups observed in open habitat on several dates.

GUIRA CUCKOO (Guira guira)
Several seen on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th.

TROPICAL SCREECH OWL (Megascops choliba)
A pair roosting at the wetland reserve on the 11th was the only record.

BURROWING OWL (Athene cunicularia)
A family of four birds were seen on the High Altitude trail on the 5th.

WHITE COLLARED SWIFT (Stretoprocne zonaris)
Small numbers recorded on several dates.

ASHY-TAILED SWIFT (Chaetura Andrei)
Small numbers recorded on several dates.

SAW BILLED HERMIT (Ramphodon naevius)
Recorded almost daily around the lodge.

SCALE THROATED HERMIT (Phaethornis eurynome)
Up to three seen on five dates.

DUSKY-THROATED HERMIT (P. squalidus)
A single at the lodge on the 4th was the only record.

REDDISH HERMIT (P. rubber)
A single at the wetland reserve on the 11th was the only record.

SOMBRE HUMMINGBIRD (Aphantochroa cirrhochloris)
Recorded daily at the lodge.

SWALLOW TAILED HUMMINGBIRD (Eupetomena macroura)
Seem almost daily in a variety of habitats.

PLOVERCREST (Stephanoxis lalandi)
Three on the Macae de Cima trail and two on High Altitude Trail.

GLITTERING-BELLIED EMERALD (Chlorostilbon aureoventris)
Seen on three excursions.

BLACK JACOBIN (Melanotrochilus fuscus)
Single birds at the lodge on just 2 days.

VIOLET CAPPED WOODNYMPH (Thalurania glaucopis)
Recorded daily.

WHITE THROATED HUMMINGBIRD (Leucochloris albicollis)
Recorded on four excursions.

SAPPHIRE SPANGLED EMERALD (Amazilia lactea)
One on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th was the only record.

BRAZILIAN RUBY (Clytolaema rubricauda)
Recorded daily.

BLACK-THROATED TROGON (Trogon rufus)
A single on the Bamboo trail on the 7th was the only record.

SURUCUA TROGON (Trogon surrucura)
Ones or twos on four dates.

RUFOUS-CAPPED MOTMOT (Baryphthengus ruficapillus)
One at the national park on the 13th was the only record.

THREE-TOED JACAMAR (Jacamaralcyon tridactyla)
As usual this bird performed very well with three being recorded on the 16th.

CRESCENT-CHESTED PUFFBIRD (Malacoptila striata)
One seen at the lodge on the 14th was the only record.

Two at the lodge on the 5th and two on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th.

SPOT BILLED TOUCANET (Selenidera maculirostris)
Recorded daily at the lodge feeders and on several of the excursions.

CHANNEL BILLED TOUCAN (Rhamphastos vitellinus)
Three at the lodge on the 3rd.

WHITE BARRED PICULET (Picumnus cirratus)
Regularly seen on woodland excursuions.

WHITE WOODPECKER (Melanerpes candidus)
Seen on the Macae de Cima and High Altitude Trail excursions.

YELLOW-EARED WOODPECKER (Veniliornis maculifrons)
Singles on the Bamboo trail and at the national park.

YELLOW BROWED WOODPECKER (Piculus aurulentus)

Several records of up to five birds on open country excursions.

Heard on several trails and finally, four seen on the Cedae trail on the 14th.

WHITE SHOULDERED FIRE EYE (Pyriglena leucoptera)
Up to three seen on four dates.

SHORT-TAILED ANTTHRUSH (Chamaeza campanisona)
Heard only, on the Cedae trail on the 6th.

BRAZILIAN ANTTHRUSH (C. ruficauda)
A single on the Macae de Cima trail on the 8th was the only record.

RUFOUS GNATEATER (Conopophaga lineate)
Recorded on five dates.

BLACK CHEEKED GNATEATER (C. melanops)
Recorded on four dates.

SLATY BRISTLFRONT (Merulaxis ater)
One showed well on the Theodora trail on the 12th.

MOUSE-COLOURED TAPACULO (Scytalopus speluncae)
Singles on the Bamboo trail and High Altitude Trail.

GREY-WINGED COTINGA (Tijuca condita)
Excellent views of one on the High Altitude Trail on the 9th.

BLACK AND GOLD COTINGA (Tijuca atra)
Seen or heard on seven dates.

HOODED BERRYEATER (Carpornis cucullatus)
Seen on both visits to the Bamboo trail.

BARE-THROATED BELLBIRD (Procnias nudicollis)
Three on the Macae de Cima trail on the 8th were the only records.

WHITE-BEARDED MANAKIN (Manacus manacus)
One on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th and several at the wetland reserve on the 11th.

BLUE MANAKIN (Chiroxiphia caudata)

Recorded on all trips into the forest, giving very pleasing views on several occasions.

PIN-TAILED MANAKIN (Ilicuramilitaris)
Two on the Bamboo trail on the 7th.

SOUTHERN BEARDLESS TYRANNULET (Camptostoma obsoletum)
One at the wetland reserve on the 11th.

YELLOW TYRANNULET (Capsiempis flaveola)
One on the Bamboo trail and two at the wetland reserve.

YELLOW BELLIED ELAENIA (Elaenia flavogaster)
One on the Jacamar excursion and two at the wetland reserve.

OLIVACEOUS ELAENIA (E. mesoleuca)
A single bird on the Theodora trail.

WHITE-CRESTED TYRANNULET (Serpophaga subcristata)
Three on the High Altitude trail were the only records.

Two at the National Park on the 13th.

Three on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th.

OCHRE-FACED TODY-FLYCATCHER (Todirostrum plumbeiceps)
Recorded on five dates.

YELLOW LORED TODY FLYCATCHER (T. poliocephalum)
Recorded on three dates.

COMMON TODY-FLYCATCHER (T. cinereum)
Two on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th.

YELLOW OLIVE FLYCATCHER (Tolmomyias sulphurescens)
One of the commonest flycatchers being seen or heard almost daily.

Seen at the lodge and on both visits to the Bamboo trail.

A single on the High Altitude Trail and three on the Jacamar excursions.

BLUE-BILLED BLACK-TYRANT (Knipolegus cyanirostris)
A total of 5 on the High Altitude Trails.

VELVETY BLACK-TYRANT (K. nigerrimus)
Singles on the High Altitude Trails.

MASKED WATER TYRANT (Fluvicola nengeta)
Recorded daily at the lodge and on several of the excursions.

WHITE-HEADED MARSH-TYRANT (Arundicola leucocephala)
Three at the wetland reserve.

STREAMER-TAILED TYRANT (Gubernetes yetapa)
Six on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th.

Commonly recorded on the feeders at the lodge.

Recorded everyday from the feeders by the lodge and in suitable lowland forest habitats.

Recorded regularly within the grounds of the lodge and in suitable lowland forest habitats.

BRASSY BREASTED TANAGER (T. desmaresti)
This stunning bird was recorded on several dates from forest above 700 metres asl.

GILT-EDGED TANAGER (T. cyanoventris)
Three on the Jacamar excursion on the 16th were the only records.

Recorded almost daily on the feeders by the lodge and from suitable forested habitat.
