Although I lead tours for WINGS, this was a personal, cost-shared trip with two friends from the United States. I had led three tours to most of these areas, but always in late November to early December. I had hoped for a peak in birdsong, migrants, and a visit to Calakmul, which I had not seen before. We timed this for a peak in bird song, and we weren't disappointed. I heard many species singing for the first time, even after having seen them many times in the winter. We had especially hoped to find Cozumel Thrasher, which in recent years has been seen most often in late April-early May, sometimes singing from the power lines. They are apparently still on the island, with at least two sightings since Hurricane Wilma this past October, probably of the same bird. I suspect that competition with Black Catbirds might be a problem. They were extremely abundant on the island and frequently responded to Cozumel Thrasher tape by coming in close.

We were here at the average start of the rainy season, but rains were quite delayed, and it was mostly sunny every day. Furthermore, I was told it hadn't rained since Hurricane Wilma, late October 2005. As a result it was really hot. The high temps on the east coast of the peninsula, with a wind directly off the sea, was about 88ºF. At Valladolid, about in the center of the peninsula, it was about 98ºF. And on the west coast, such as Mérida, it was getting up to 108ºF, this according to weather.com data. Contributing to the heat surely were wildfires all over the place, and these were compounded not only by the heat and dryness but by the enormous fuel load from hurricane-felled trees. It did not appear that any of these fires were being fought.

Migrants were found everywhere that we went, but nowhere in great concentrations.

April 30, 2006: Arrival at CUN at 12:40. Mich then Joseph arrived at about 16:45. Took shuttle to Playa del Carmen, arriving 18:13. Boarded 19:00 p.m. ferry, arriving 19:43. Got car by 20:15. In hotel 20:30. Dinner at Cozumel Resort. Back at 22:05.
Since last August there are no shuttle flights between Cancun and Cozumel, so our only option was to take a ferry. Tickets for the shuttle were $18.00/person in a collectivo from either Gray Line or Green Line, with counters just beyond customs and also just outside the exit of the airport. A private taxi would have been only a little more for the 3 of us, I think $56.00. The ferry is about $10 and leaves every hour or so.

I had made car reservations with Executive Rent-a-car via e-mail (reservas AT executive.com.mx, English can be used), mid-size at $50/day including insurance, both on Cozumel and for the mainland portion on our return to Playa del Carmen. The closest Executive office on Cozumel is about 4 blocks straight ahead from the ferry dock. Our reservation was in their computer, but they hadn't been warned and didn't have a car there; it took us about 20 minutes to finally get a car delivered from one of their many island offices.

We had reservations at Villablanca Garden Beach Hotel, $63/night on the 30th and $54/night on May 1. OK quality, restaurant not open very late or every night.

There is a 24-hour market near the gas station in town, if you need breakfast items early.

May 1: All day on Cozumel. Mostly sunny, wind from SE, to 86ºF.
We concentrated our first hours of the morning on the road entering San Gervasio ruins, though we were not allowed past the gate before 7:00. We instead wandered side roads near there until 7:00. The damage from Hurricane Wilma was astounding everywhere on the island. Most bird numbers seemed normal, but did not see: Yucatan Flycatcher, Western Spindalis, Rufous-browed Peppershrike, Rose-throated Tanager or Cozumel Thrasher. Yucatan Vireos and Black Catbirds were especially abundant.

In the afternoon we went to El Cedral, where highlights were a Black-whiskered Vireo and a Gray Kingbird. We drove around the island past Punta Sur (which was closed due to road repair, so we didn't see if any of the terns were back), where there was another Gray Kingbird. Along the east beach was an apparent breeding colony of Least Terns. We stopped at the mangrove swamp at the east end of the trans-island road. The mangroves were mostly dead, and the marsh was becoming putrid, with all cattails brown. Nevertheless, we taped in a Ruddy Crake right next to the road on the south side.

Late in the afternoon we checked out the Cozumel Country Club, where we met the manager who gave us permission to come early the next morning. He was hesitant, due to liability issues. At the pond on the way in were White-rumped Sandpipers. The plantings near the office and Manhattan-priced cafe were good for hummingbirds (both species).

We then finished the day birding along the road beyond the sewage treatment plant, where despite the overgrown tangles, we were able to see more Ruddy Crakes. Several Bobolinks were here as well, and Lesser Nighthawks were common and vocal.

May 2: Early morning at Cozumel Country Club (6:20-9:20), then ferry ride 12:05-12:35, rented car, depart 13:20, lunch in Tulum, and arrival in F.C.P. 15:45, departure for Vigía Chico Road 16:20-21:30. Mostly sunny, SE winds on ocean, 72-85ºF.
Highlights this morning were migrant Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Bobolinks, two Mangrove Cuckoos and a Couch's Kingbird, the latter a rarity on the island. We talked to one of the American workers on the golf course who told us that a longtime resident and worker on the golf course had seen a Cozumel Thrasher about a week earlier, foraging on the ground under a few ornamentals planted to the side of the trail next to hole #8.

We turned the car in, where they tried to nail damage charges on us, but we got out of it. We got on the noon ferry ride back to Playa del Carmen (already quite windy and spray made ocean watching difficult) and eventually found the Executive office (had to ask around; even the guy who I hired to porter my luggage didn't know where it was).

We spent the rest of the afternoon on the well-known Vigía Chico Road to the NE of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, staying after dark for night birds. We eventually saw a Yucatan Poorwill fly over in response to playback, but Yucatan Nightjars were just out of reach. We did all our night birding near the diagonal track at 6.3 km in Howell.

May 3: Vigía Chico Road all day; back at hotel from 12:00-16:30, out again until 21:40. Mostly sunny, 70-85ºF.
We had success with all of the birds we expected here, with the exception of Stub-tailed Spadebill, which we had heard only yesterday afternoon. These included Gray-throated Chat, Yellow-lored Parrot, Yucatan Flycatcher and Rose-throated Tanager. We came across no army ants. We returned in the evening, a highlight being discovering a roost of about 10 Vaux's Swifts in a well mostly blocked by logs and rocks, right next to the road. They fluttered vertically into the ground just a couple feet from us, starting at about 7:00 p.m. This was opposite the one and only residence and hut on the left as you are headed towards Sian Ka'an. With the open areas, Common Pauraques dominated here, but this is also where we had a Northern Potoo. We finally connected with a Yucatan Nightjar that was willing to fly into tape, at N19º36.226', W87º59.857', 4-point-something km in from Howell's 0.0 km turnoff in town.

May 4: Vigía Chico Road until 11:30, drive to Chicanná Ecovillage until 15:45. Calakmul until 19:00.
We birded all the way to the Sian Ka'an gate this morning, the predawn chorus pretty impressive, including dawn song of Red-crowned Ant-Tanager (see recording on the xeno-canto.org website). Closer to the gate the habitat gets scrubber and (for us) less interesting, except for a quick view of Chestnut-colored Woodpecker right at the gate. A chorus of some 5 Black-headed Trogons and 1 Collared Trogon on the way back was strange.

We had made reservations by phone at the Hotel Puerta Calakmul, the hotel closest to the ruins and biosphere reserve. It was a good thing I called from Felipe Carrillo Puerto to confirm our reservation, as I was told that the HPC was closed for renovations and than all reservations were forwarded to the Chicanná Ecovillage Resort, 46 km farther east along the main highway towards Chetumal. This is a very spendy place, at $90/night per room (single or double occupancy). No air conditioning, just ceiling fans. Only a few km farther east is the town of Xpujil, which has much cheaper (and likely much lower quality) accommodations. I recommend going for dinner in Xpujil too (the Chicanná restaurant is overpriced), though we were gouged enormously by one of the roadside restaurants here. For early breakfast food, we stocked up on stuff from the grocery stores in Xpujil and each evening ordered hard-boiled eggs from the restaurant where we had dinner. (We had a cooler, which I had brought with me.)

Km. 144 Escárcega - Chetumal Highway
N18º31.269, W89º28.704', 274 m.

After checking into the hotel, we drove to the ruins, which is a good 66 miles from the hotel. Drive west on the Escárcega - Chetumal Highway to about Km 98 (46 kms from the hotel) and turn to the south (plenty of signs). At about Km 20 on this road is a checkpoint. It is another 40 km from the gate to the parking lot of the ruins. The guy at the gate let us past, even though it was 17:45 and the ruins close at 18:00. We promised we were going to bird along the road only. We saw our first Ocellated Turkey just before this checkpoint, then saw several once we were past it. The oddest bird we had in the afternoon was a Spotted Sandpiper on the road, with no standing water for many, many miles. This being the driest time of year, all of the usual ponds (one with a recent report of Agami Heron, even) were completely dry and full of brush.

Make sure you have plenty of fuel; there is a Pemex a couple km east of Xpujil.

May 5: Calakmul, departing hotel at 6:05, back at 15:30. Sunny and hot, 70-98º
We stopped along the road early in the morning at least twice, once watching 3 Royal Flycatchers at a nest at N18º19.932', W89º51.606', 254 m.

We made another stop for Ornate Hawk-Eagle, another for two male Great Curassows.

At the ruins, we finally discovered the trail behind the visitor building (not the road beyond the gate, which leads to service buildings and a service road to the ruins).

Calakmul parking lot: N18º07.075', W89º47.707'.

Entrance to ruins: 33 pesos per person

The trail leads for about 1.4 km, with various forks not well signed. The fastest way to the tallest temples is to stay right (straight) at the first fork, then left at the T (service road), then straight at both trail junctions (to left and to right). Once in among some ruins, bear to the left to the far end. Climbing to the top of this temple you can see the other tall one.

Temple: N18º06.502', W89º48.272', 277 m.

We headed back to the hotel for the hottest part of the day, and Mich went out and found some nice trails on the hotel property, including a compost pile with some birds. His best find was a couple Black-throated Bobwhite, well out of their mapped range.

May 6: Calakmul, departing hotel at 4:00, arriving 5:30, and on temple at 6:20. Back to hotel at 14:10, departure at 14:30 for Rio Lagartos, arrived 21:05. Sunny, 75-95ºF
This morning we opted for an extra early arrival at the ruins, letting ourselves past the gate at 20 km. Even though it was well before the official opening time and still dark, a guard at the ruins visitor center was ready to take our entrance fee (though I think we did wake him).

We found two army ant swarms, one of each species (Eciton burchelli and Labidus praedator) at the same location, on the trail behind the first tall temple, and there were 4 of 5 woodcreeper species in attendance (Olivaceous was seen elsewhere).

We missed our most sought-after species here: Lovely Cotinga and Black-throated Shrike-Tanager. Perhaps a moister time of year, with more fruiting trees, would be better for the former. And perhaps the latter is simply scarce here. We did have one nice mixed flock on our way out, but the only "good" species it contained were Gray-headed Tanager and Long-billed Gnatwren.

We left the hotel at 14:30 and arrived in Rio Lagartos at about 21:00. (LONG DRIVE!) Be forewarned about the speed trap north of Valladolid, the kilometer just south of the turnoff to Ek-Balam ruins.

We found the Restaurant Isla Contoy for a quick but late dinner, then got rooms at:
Hotel "Villa de Pescadores"
Sr. Felipe Gonzalez Rodriguez
Calle 14 No. 93, Malecón Costero
C.P. 97720, Rio Lagartos, Yucatán, Mexico
Tel. (986) 862-0020
riolagartos2002 AT yahoo.com

Some rooms have A/C for $45, but those rooms with no A/C typically have a nice breeze and are about $32.

May 7: Rio Lagartos 6:20-14:00. Drive from Rio Lagartos, Chichén Itzá 15:00-16:30, drive back to CUN, then to Puerto Morelos. Sunny and hot, 70-100ºF
I had been in touch with Ismael Navarros, riolaga AT hotmail.com, a local fisherman and birder whom I have hired before with my groups, both as a boatman and an on-land guide. He had recommended the hotel and said that during the low season we wouldn't have any trouble getting rooms without reservations. His inlaws own the Isla Contoy restaurant. We had made arrangements for him to join us for the morning of the 8th, but we were here a day early and he already had other plans. Instead, we were joined by his brother-in-law Diego, who also speaks English and knows the local birds quite well.

With Diego we first birded along the road to the San Salvador Ranch, where Black-throated Bobwhite and Turquoise-browed Motmot were very common and vocal. We saw only female Mexican Sheartails, one pair of Yucatan Wrens, and one pair of Lesser Roadrunners. Migrant Gray-cheeked Thrush and Blackburnian and Tennessee Warblers were good finds. Then he took us to an old road through the mangroves, formerly an access road to the town's water supply, and now part of the nature reserve. Here we had very close American Pygmy-Kingfisher and the Jabiru nest with two nearly fledged young. Diego said one had already fledged and that the adult in the nest was a helper from this pair's earlier nesting two or three years ago. He's been keeping track of this pair of Jabirus since they first showed up in October 2002, following Hurricane Isidor. We also saw some migrants, such as a Hooded Warbler and many Yellow Warblers.

To bird this road and enter any other areas of mangroves (by boat) requires buying a permit, which you can buy at the Isla Contoy restaurant. You get a plastic wrist band to show that you have paid, but I don't know how strictly this is patrolled, and we completely forgot to do this. Also, this road can be closed, as it had been while the Jabirus were nesting.

We had lunch at the Isla Contoy, then drove to Chichén Itzá, via the scenic route. From the junction just south of Rio Lagartos we headed west towards San Felipe, then south from there. The road goes past a few wet spots that even in this driest of times had water. We walked around one cattail-choked pond and saw a Least Bittern. Also along this road is a large Wood Stork colony, off to the east. We then continued through the towns of Panabá, Sucila, Espita, Xuilub, Dzitas, and Pisté to the ruins. Even though ruins elsewhere in the country are free on Sundays, we were charged half price. They close at 17:15 or 17:30, but people were mostly clearing out by 16:30.

We got on the toll highway back to Cancun, making the exit to the right signed for the airport. Note: the second toll booth east of Valladolid was about $18.00. And once beyond that there are NO exits and you are committed to going all the way to Cancun.

We spent some time at the airport changing our flights to a day or two early then drove south to Puerto Morelos for the night, less than 20 minutes south of the airport.

We stayed at Rancho Sak Ol, formerly Rancho Libertad, which up until October last year was a birdy place to stay, lots of trees and mangroves. Unfortunately, Puerto Morelos received a direct hit from Hurricane Wilma and the swamp is a veritable mangrove morgue. The hotel is up and running, though they are still working on a sea wall, enclosing the eating area, and fixing up the driveway. The rooms are quite nice, only some with air conditioning, and come with drinking water and an excellent continental breakfast. The beds are a bit odd, each corner suspended by a rope from the ceiling, so they sway and rock a bit. Some may find this disagreeable, but I thought it was really nice. Since the hotel is about a km from town and doesn't have a restaurant, they offer use of bicycles too.
