Overall we did very well, missing just a handful of the specialties and endemics of north-east Brazil. This was due in no small measure to the excellent guiding skills of Ciro Albano (www.nebrazilbirding.com - ciroalbano@yahoo.com.br) and we can highly recommend him. Ciro’s adroitness at using audio equipment to detect and locate birds is something to behold. With the exception of Ciro, all the participants are Australian. Roads and infrastructure in Brazil are good compared to many South American countries, although long drives were required at times for this itinerary. Porto Seguro aside, the standard of accommodation and food was good to excellent throughout the trip. So too was the weather, with little interruption from rain and mild to warm temperatures throughout.
October 7 – The group met at the airport in Fortaleza in the province of Caera with our Ciro and our driver Elias. We drove to Serra de Baturite (800m) in our comfortable bus to visit a private reserve, Baixa Fresca; nesting boxes have been put up here for Grey-breasted Parakeets. Overnight in the Hotel Alto de Serra, with late afternoon birding in the hotel gardens.
October 8 – Early morning birding in humid forest in the gardens of the nearby Hotel Remainso, with the late morning in the Hotel Alto de Serra gardens before we drove to the town of Quixada, stopping at wetlands on the way. Overnight Hotel Pedra dos Ventos Quixada, a delightful establishment perched on a rocky escarpment with views over the surrounding caatinga.
October 9 – Morning birding in the dry caatinga around the hotel before we drove to the town of Crato, visiting the humid forest of the lower slopes of the Chapada do Araripe in the late afternoon. Overnight Hotel Encosta de Serra.
October 10 – We birded the caatinga carvasco scrub of the plateau (800m) in the Floresta National de Chapada do Araripe. Overnight Crato.
October 11 – Mostly a driving day, with a long haul to Canudos in Bahia state, passing through Pernambuco state and again stopping for waterbirds, with late afternoon birding along a road near the town. Overnight at the basic but homely Hotel Brasil.
October 12 – We birded the dry caatinga of the Canudos area, especially around the Fazenda Serra Branca, the stronghold of Lear’s Macaw. Travelling east, we stopped at a site for Pectoral Antwren before driving to Uni dos Palmares in Alagoas state. Overnight Hotel Quilomba Park.
October 13 – A 3am start in 4x4 vehicles was required to reach the Atlantic rainforest of the Murici Ecological Station (600m) by dawn. All day in the reserve. Overnight Uni dos Palmares.
October 14 – Another early start to get to more Atlantic rainforest in the Jaqueira-Frie Caneca Reserve, a second site for the Alagoas endemics. In the late afternoon we drove to the coastal tourist town of Tamandare in Pernambuco state. Overnight Pousada Mar Azul.
October 15 – We negotiated bad roads through a sea of sugar plantations to bird remnant patches of lowland Atlantic rainforest in Trapiche Forest and Cachoeiro Linda Forest. Overnight Tamandare.
October 16 - A long drive to the town of Estancia in Sergipe state, birding the sandy forest of Del Crasto in the afternoon. Overnight Hotel Magnus.
October 17 – Another long drive to the town of Lencois in the Chapada Diamantina in Bahia state. Overnight at the delightful Pousada da Geleia, where we met the owners Lia and Ze Carlos.
October 18 – We birded mixed caatinga-Atlantic rainforest, dry caatinga and campos rupestres near Lencois, on the Palmeiras-Guine Road, and at Morro do Pai Inacioep (1120m). The rugged scenery with steep canyons and extensive vistas was impressive. Overnight Lencois.
October 19 – We drove to Mucuge in another sector of the Chapada Diamantina, birding cerrado flats near the town. Overnight Pousada Mucuge.
October 20 – Early morning birding the cerrado, then a drive to the town of Boa Nova, stopping en route for the Diademed Tapaculo. In the late afternoon we visited mata de cipo forest around a delightful rocky area with numerous small cactii and large bromelliads. Flowers on the cactii were a magnet for numerous hummingbirds. Overnight Pousada Solar.
October 21 - A wonderful day of birding in the montane Atlantic rainforest of the area. Overnight Boa Nova.
October 22 – A second day in the rainforest, with a further visit also to the mata de cipo. In the early evening we had a memorable experience with Giant Snipe in a grassy glade near rainforest. Overnight Boa Nova.
October 23 - We drove to Porto Seguro on the coast, making a productive stop at a wetland on the way, and visiting the Veracel Reserve in the afternoon. Overnight at the disappointing Hotel Porto Real.
October 24 – All day in the sandy Atlantic rainforest of the reserve. Overnight Porto Seguro.
October 25 – We drove to the town of Camacan, where we were met by Victor Becker, the owner of the lodge in the Serra Bonita Reserve. We transferred to Victor’s 4x4 for the drive up to lodge, meeting his wife Clemira. Everyone in the group agreed that this site was a highlight of the trip.
October 26 - All day in the 1200ha Atlantic rainforest reserve, where we were entertained by the antics of a pet young howler monkey. Overnight at the lodge.
October 27 – We drove to the town of Itubera, staying at the comfortable Fazenda Michelin in the Michelin Reserve, where remnants of Atlantic rainforest have been preserved in the midst of vast rubber plantations. We visited a waterfall near the reserve in the late afternoon.
October 28 – All day in the reserve, including a frustrating encounter with Bahia Tapacula which ended in a rare dip. Overnight Fazenda Michelin.
October 29 – We drove to Salvador in the morning to meet our afternoon flights out of Salvador.
