OVERVIEW
The four of us travelled from Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Queen Elizabeth NP in just over two weeks. Peter and Ellen had a brief trip to the same area in November 2017, but it was a first trip for John and Christine with the obvious hope of seeing primates and endemic birds.
We flew via Amsterdam to Entebbe (more pleasant when you live in Cornwall, UK) and were escorted in Uganda by Great Lakes Safaris, the trip was booked through Audley Travel.
ITINERARY
Jun 11: After a weekend in Amsterdam we took a day flight to Enetbbe (via a Kigali drop-off and pick-up) and spent the night at Boma Guesthouse, Entebbe.
Jun 12: We were met by our driver, Robert and headed for Lake Mburo via Mabamba swamp. We had excellent views of Papyrus Gonolek, and, eventually, after much hard work on behalf of the boat crew, Shoebill. Next two nights at Mihingo Lodge.
Jun 13: Two full days in Mburo with game drives and bush walks. We’ll be in forest most of the trip, so a chance to bird Acacia parkland. Best mammal: Dwarf Mongoose, best birds: Buff-bellied Warbler and Black-shouldered Nightjar.
Jun 14: Long drive to Gorilla Safari Lodge in Ruhija, Bwindi NP where we spent 4 nights. According to Robert, the dirt road into Ruhija is much improved, only about an hour into the park from the main road.
Jun 15: Robert took Pete and John to the park gate, where he negotiated a guard for us for $20. He drove us around 5 km west from where we walked back (with the guard at a distance). We had a bad time for an hour, throwing away Dusky Twinspot and, I fear, a Shelley’s Crimsonwing, but birding improved and we had a good introduction to higher altitude birds. Our first Regal Sunbirds and Stripe-beasted Tits. Best bird: Handsome Francolin. A pair of African Grey Parrots flew over the lodge in the afternoon.
Jun 16: A great day! Great Lakes had secured a bird guide for Grauer’s Broadbill. Amazingly there was a recently discovered nest (two weeks before) much closer than the old stake-out in the depths of the swamp. We set off with the guide and guard Rachel from UWA (with the Kalashnikov). Lots of birding en route, then down to the nest. Rachel had seen chicks 5 days before, but all was quiet. We worried that they had fledged and flown! John entertained Pete by calling out Grauer’s Swamp Warbler while Ellen and Chris talked to Rachel. After a while Pete went back to make sure that the woemn weren’t too bored and they said, casually, ‘Rachel’s seen it’: ‘when?’: ‘oh, just now’. I glanced at the nest and the adult flew in! We watched as the chicks were fed and fecal pellets removed. A fantastic experience.
Jun 17: Mountain Gorilla day! A short but steep descent to a family complete with silverback. A stunning hour only marred by an uninhibited swiss couple in the group! Birded school lane in the afternoon, excellent.
Jun 18: Headed for our next accommodation Chamaeleon Hill Lodge, Lake Mutanda. An excellent birding stop was at Lake Bunyoni, and we had two slightly extra-limital birds: a White-headed Black Chat by the main road and a Black-faced Canary by Lake Mutanda.
Jun 19: We had arranged a trip into Mgahinga NP to visit a habituated group of Golden Monkeys, endemic to the Virunga Mountains on the border of Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC. A brilliant experience with a lively group of around 30 animals. Birds included Mountain Yellow Warbler, Ruwenzori Hill Babbler and Archer’s Robin Chat.
Jun 20: Transferred to Buhoma Lodge from Lake Mutanda. Robert drove us to Nkuringo Gate, on the south side of Bwindi NP and we walked for a few hours to Buhoma. A good flock on the saddle, including Black-billed Weaver and Red-headed Malimbe, then Black Bee-eaters on the way down to the Lodge.
Jun 21: John and Pete took two guards (compulsory!) to the Waterfall trail. John had Grauer’s Warbler, Pete had Fire-throated Alethe; also Dusky Tit and many Greenbuls. We heard several Short-tailed Warblers but never got a glimpse. In the afternoon Pete birded around the lodge in the rain, while Ellen, John and Christine visited the Community Hospital.
Jun 22: Drove to Kyambura Gorge Lodge through Kigezi WP and the southern portion of QEII NP. Lions in trees by main road near Kyambura.
Jun 23: Chimpanzee day in Kyambura Gorge! Pete and Ellen’s second Chimp track, this went like the first, no one knows where they are, and then suddenly – there they are. Also a singing Western Nicator. Afternoon boat trip on the Kazinga channel with Elephants, Crocodiles, Storks, Lapwings etc.
Jun 24: Excellent game drive in north-eastern section on QEII NP with many Kob rutting, Lions, Buffalo, Rothschild’s Giraffe. In the afternoon Pete went on the Kyambura Swamp trail with a local guide. Others went to the bat caves and relaxed.
25 Jun: Driven back to Entebbe for night flight back to Amsterdam.
